Balticon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Balticon is the title of the Maryland Regional Science fiction convention, sponsored by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society (BSFS).
Balticon brings together hundreds of science fiction professionals and creative amateurs with well over one thousand SF fans for a yearly event held inside a hotel in the Baltimore area.
Before 2001, Balticon was held on Easter weekend to take advantage of lower hotel costs; however, in 2001 Balticon moved to Memorial Day Weekend and expanded to a four day convention.

Balticon left the Hunt Valley Inn and moved downtown to the Hyatt, which would be the main hotel for the 1983 Worldcon.
Along with its new quarters, Balticon adopted a more restrictive weapons policy: no weapons could be worn, carried or displayed except a half hour before and after the masquerade.
Balticon 16 briefly reinstated the Easter Morning 10:17-1/2 AM Wakeup party -- but the Con Suite was in the Lord Baltimore, a three-block walk away.

Balticon 15 was also a showcase con for the Baltimore in '83 bid, and everything about the convention revealed the care that the committee had taken to make a good impression.
Balticon 15 was the last Balticon in the Hunt Valley Inn.
Balticon 15 was, coincidentally, Don's fifteenth con; the only time that a con number matched his own personal "number of cons." And since the 47th Worldcon was his 62nd con, there is little chance that the numbers will ever match up again.

 Convention Reviews: Balticon '94
Balticon used seems to have peaked as a filking con in 1992, as far as I can tell; it used to be very anti-filk, it became the region's major filking convention through lots of hard work and sacrifice by 1992.
However, since he is a regular at Balticon, he didn't draw any additional people (at least that I'm aware of).
Likewise, since his primary strength is not his vocal skills, the combination of these two factors resulted in all the filksings being a pretty much generic East Coast filksing with mostly adequate performances of the same songs that we've heard again and again (or, at least I have).

I have to say that Balticon has always been toward the top of my favorites list, not just because it’s a good convention, but also because years ago it was also my first.
The dealer room was almost identical to the last time I attended a Balticon in the Omni (three years ago).
Balticon is a great time, and an overwhelming wave of science fiction, fantasy, costumes, music, science and just plain old fun.

Balticon was my first literary con, dedicated to authors and the writing of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror.
While I learned at Balticon there is no such thing as a "bad panel" (If the con-goer's found what they were looking for or if they were just plain entertained, the panel served its function...), I did want to share a few fun memories from my favorite panels.
Book signings were being scheduled during the weekend, and the organizers at Balticon 36 were trying to pair up authors together.
