Baltimore is also the site of the first architectural monument honoring George Washington, a 178-foot Doric column erected in 1829 and designed by Robert Mills, who later designed the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. Baltimore became an independent city in 1851, being detached from Baltimore County at that time.
Baltimore grew swiftly in the mid- to late 18th century as the granary for sugar-producing colonies in the Caribbean.

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (BandO) is one of the oldest railroads in the United States, with an original line from the port of Baltimore, Maryland west to the Ohio River at Wheeling, West Virginia and Parkersburg, West Virginia.
In 1831 a law was passed in Maryland, enabling the BandO to build its Washington Branch, connecting Baltimore to the national capital of Washington, D.C. This opened in 1835, and later served as a terminus for the Annapolis and Elk Ridge Railroad to Annapolis.
