In 1921, the club was renamed the Elite Giants as the team’s success and popularity continued to grow.
By 1928, Wilson was ready to move his Elite Giants into the national arena and made several attempts to gain entry into the Negro National League and the Southern Negro League, the two leagues of the time.
The Negro National League was reincarnated in 1933 and the Elite Giants rejoined the league for two additional seasons in 1933-34.

During the nine-year skein of pennants by the Homestead Grays, Tom Wilson's Elite Giants often pushed them to the wire.
The two teams were neck-and-neck in the 1942 pennant stretch, headed for a blanket finish, when Roy Campanella and Sammy T. Hughes left the team to showcase for the major leagues in an exhibition game and were given a suspension.
Spitball ace Bill Byrd and lefthander Jonas Gaines kept the Elites in the race all year, with support from the bats of George Scales and an outfield of hard-hitters, Wild Bill Wright, Henry Kimbro and Bill Hoskins.

Along with the New York Lincoln Stars and the Indianapolis ABC's, the 1917 edition of the Chicago American Giants was one of the premiere teams during World War I. Legendary greats such as Bruec Petway, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, Pete Hill, Frank Wickware, and "Cannonball" Dick Redding were on the squad.
The next year the Giants lost the first Colored World Series to the Kansas City Monarchs in a 10-game series, but avenged their defeat the following year, beating KC in six games.
The NNL was reincarnated in 1933 and the Elite Giants rejoined the league for two additional seasons in 1933-34.

Ernest Burke, a pitcher and outfielder for Baltimore elite Giants of the Negro Leagues, died on Jan. 31, 2004, from complications of kidney cancer.
Burke, one of the first fl Marines to serve in World War II, played for the Elite Giants for four seasons.
He later played in the Canadian Provincial League and, according to his obituary, hit.308 in two seasons there.

As a result of his slugging reputation, Lockett was offered a tryout with the Chicago American Giants in 1937, and he would play with them, off and on, until 1950.
Lockett spent one summer with the Cincinnati-Indianapolis Clowns barnstorming through the Dakotas with Buster Haywood and Goose Tatum, but he chose not to “clown” or participate in the silly routines performed by the players.
