	Science fiction fandom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Science fiction fandom or SF fandom is the community of people actively interested in science fiction and fantasy literature, and in contact with one another based upon that interest.
		Science Fiction Societies were launched as chapters of the Science Fiction League and when it faded into history, several of the original League chapters remained viable and were subsequently incorporated as independent organizations.
		Participation in science fiction fandom often overlaps with other similar interests, such as fantasy role-playing games, comic books and anime, and in the broadest sense fans of these activities are felt to be part of the greater community of SF fandom.

		He appeared to view the society, which was founded in 1974, more as a hobby club where much of the interaction between members and the public was of a social nature.

		Now the society, founded formally in 1974, is arguing before the state's highest court that Hammerman got it wrong, and that it should receive a tax exemption for the building in the Highlandtown neighborhood it has owned since 1991.
		Edelman explained that many science fiction writers have advanced degrees in physics and are particularly interested in discussing how scientific advances will shape the future, therefore making the genre particularly educational.

		BALTIMORE -- Jack L. Chalker, who wrote more than 60 science-fiction and fantasy novels, died of kidney failure Friday at Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore.
		Chalker organized the society's first Balticon, an annual conference now in its 39th year that has grown from a few dozen attendees to as many as 2,000.
		Chalker, "The Science Fantasy Publishers: A Critical and Bibliographic History," was a Hugo finalist in 1992.

	Jack L. Chalker
