The Baltoro glacier is situated on the southern slopes of the central Karakoram Range in the Baltistan area of Jammu and Kashmir.
This glacier gives rise to the Shigar River, which is a tributary of the Indus River.
These include a glacier from the southwestern slopes of the Gasherbrum peak and a tributary glacier from the northwestern slope of the Masherbrum peak, both in the Karakoram.

 Snow Lake/Biafo — Hispar Glacier Trek
The town of Askole is nestled in a valley surrounded by cliffs and peaks, and is a verdant green due the locals’ agricultural activities, in contrast to the grey and brown of the nearby cliffs.
We crossed a side glacier en route, which was quite straightforward, but the going got trickier and sometimes even life threatening as we ended up having to cut steps into long stretches of eroded dirt cliffs above the glacier, where any indication of a trail had been thoroughly wiped out by erosion.
At one point, we briefly went down to the glacier, skirted a glacial pond, and saw 2 large ice caves with a column of ice in between, supporting their common roof.

It is a demanding journey and trek to Concordia, the meeting place of the Godwin-Austen and upper Baltoro glacier, is not one to be undertaken lightly.
The Biafo Glacier is a huge river of ice 63 Km long which descends from the central peaks of the Karakoram and flows East into the Braldu Valley at a point about 10 Kms east of Askole.
After 2 hours we will reach Vigne glacier, it is also possible to walk on the Vigne glacier which is fairly easy then walking on the stony bath on the right side of the glacier but it depend on the snow condition.

All along the trek are rows of needle spires, granite towers, shinning glaciated mountains and snowy domes lines providing the greatest mountain scenery in the world.
We cross the glacier diagonally and cross Liligo campsite on the left bank of the glacier and arrive at Khaburse for overnight.

The 1991 Mexican Broad Peak Expedition approached the Baltoro via this route, as did two Spanish Broad Peak expeditions this year, and Robert and Pete Green of the SCMA crossed the pass on their return from K2 this summer.
On July 23 we ascended the western glacier and climbed to the top of Gondogoro La; the angle never exceeded 30° but there were some huge crevasses that had snowbridges.
We followed the northern lateral moraine of the Gondogoro Glacier down to where the eastern lobe of the glacier forks at a nice gravel campsite among some meadows at an elevation of 4700m (15,400').

Askole is a small irrigated and cultivated oasis on the way into the Baltoro Gl., at the base of the Braldu River Gorge.
After 5 days of hiking we reach the massive Baltoro Glacier, 2 more days up and down the huge lower glacier moraines of this glacier we reach the Dunge Glacier feeding the Baltoro Glacier.
