Baluchistan is a land of contrasta; of lofty mountains and vast, barren wastes and lush green valleys: of sunny beaches and Juniper-clad forests; of extreme temperatures - 50°C at Sibi to 10°C at Khan Mehtrazi.
In 1947, the states ruled by the Sardars acceded to Pakistan, and Baluchistan States Union was formed in 1952, which was later given the status of a full-fledged province of the country, in 1969.
Baluchistan was considered to be the most backward area of the subcontinent at the time of independence.

Although provincial status was restored to Baluchistan in 1970, limited efforts by the federal government to improve the economic status of the Baluchis remains a constant source of discontent.

There are five main public universities in Balochistan, but there many private also in setting up to deliver the increasing demands for the province.
The delicate ethnic balance in the province was disrupted by Afghan refugees making the Pashtuns at least numerically equal to the Baloch in recent years.

Fearing continued protests, the university's officials, security and disciplinary officers went to the dormitories overnight and promised to fulfill the students' demands.

UN officials say the refugees — most of them women, children and the elderly -- are living out in the open, under a harsh sun by day and frigid conditions by night.

An official from the Meterological Department said the tremor registered 4.7 on the Richter Scale, with the centre of the "mild" quake in north Baluchistan province.
Four of the injured were students who jumped from a window after the tremor at around 1:12 am local time (2012 GMT), a spokesman for the Edhi Foundation relief group told AFP.
"Four students of Baluchistan University panicked and jumped from the second floor of their hostel," the spokesman said.

Administrative/Biographical history: (Sir) Mortimer Wheeler (1890-1976), archaeologist, author and broadcaster, entered University College London in 1907, winning a classical scholarship in his intermediate arts examination, remaining to take an MA (1912) and DLitt, and becoming committed to a career in archaeology when he won the first Franks Studentship in Archaeology in 1913.

Those seeking a more authoritative and comprehensive account of the language are referred to "A Course in Baluchi" by Mohammed Abd-al-Rahman Barker and Aqil Khan Mengal, published in 1969 by McGill University, Montreal.
This is the standard work on the subject, though it is based on the Rakhshani dialect, which differs, in some respects considerably, from the Kechi dialect mostly used in Oman.
A special word of thanks is due to Professor J.H.Elfenbein, late of the University of Baluchistan in Quetta, for his enormous encouragement and patience and for the benefit his advice has been to this work.
