  Bamber Gascoigne presents universal challenge to swot-up on medical history online
With support from the research charity the Wellcome Trust, Bamber Gascoigne has teamed up with the Wellcome Centre for the History of Medicine and historian Dr Carole Reeves to provide a fascinating account of medical history.
Commenting on the launch, Bamber Gascoigne, founder of HistoryWorld, said: "History helps make sense of where we are today and although my site aims to make sense of all branches of history, medicine is central to understanding ourselves.
The Wellcome Trust supported Bamber Gascoigne's HistoryWorld project by recruiting a medical historian, Dr Carole Reeves, who spent a year researching and writing a comprehensive account of medical history in association with the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine.

Bamber Gascoigne (born January 24, 1935) is a British television presenter and author.
In the early hours of Wednesday August 8, 1979 Gascoigne was witness to the burial by Kit Williams, the author of Masquerade, of a valuable golden hare in an earthenware jar "somewhere in Britain".
Bamber Gascoigne is also an authority on the history and techniques of printmaking and graphic reproduction, with publications such as Milestones in Colour Printing and How to Identify Prints.

In 1979, Bamber was the witness to the burial of the "golden hare" jewel that was the prize in Kit Williams' national treasure hunt, Masquerade.

Many Westerners who consider themselves to be well educated would be hard put to it to name the main dynasties of China or even the approximate dates of the most important events in Chinese history.
Gascoigne thinks that the excesses of the Red Guards in the Cultural Revolution find echoes in events of the eleventh century and even earlier, in a Tang dynasty poem which he quotes.
Gascoigne's book makes a relatively painless introduction to this fascinating topic, and the excellent photographs by his wife Christina add considerably to its value.

There are plenty of copies of Gascoigne available in class, but you may wish to bring a copy with you to your session, so that you can review various sections of the book outside of class, between sessions or overnight.
I'll be referring constantly to Gascoigne in class, and you will get a lot less out of this course if you have failed to look seriously at the book before coming to RBS.
If you find that you do not have time to read Gascoigne before coming to RBS, please withdraw from the course or postpone attending until another time in order to make way for someone who is able to complete the advance reading.
