BAN is based in Seattle, USA and is highly developed, demonstrative project of the charitable (IRS 501(c)3) organization Earth Economics.
In 1995, the Basel Ban was turned into a proposed amendment which when ratified by the requisite number of Parties (see Deposit Box) will enter into force and will become international law.
BAN works to counter the regressive efforts of these few countries and to instead promote green and democratic design, sustainable consumption, economic progress and environmental justice for all.

BAN - LoveToKnow Article on BAN   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
It was the frequent use of proclamations or bans, commanding or forbidding certain actions under a threat of punishment, which caused the second of these uses to arise out of the first, as the idea of wrong-doing became associated with the proclamation or ban.
Ban had occasionally been used in a restricted sense referring only to the summons calling out the host; and as France became separated from the Empire, French law and custom seized upon this use, and soon the men liable to military service were known as the ban.
A variant form of this word was hen ban or an ban, and it is possible that some confusion between the early syllables of this word and the word arnire led to a distinction between the ban and the arrire-ban or retro-bannum.

Wikipedia:Banning policy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A ban is not the same as a block, which is used to enforce bans but also for other purposes, such as dealing with vandalism.
Users are banned as an end result of the dispute resolution process, in response to serious cases of user misconduct.
Blocks are one mechanism used to enforce bans, but they are used for other purposes too, such as dealing with rogue bots and simple vandalism, and they are not the only mechanism used to enforce bans.

Assault Weapons Ban Wordbook @ NaturalResearch.org (Natural Research)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
The ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law's sunset provision.
Proponents of the ban used the term "assault" to indicate that the weapons were used for intimidation, however; the military definition of assault has more to do with storming a beach or raiding buildings than intimidation.
The VPC estimates that more than one million assault weapons have been manufactured since the ban's passage in 1994."[4] A notable argument against this is that the VPC changed their definition of "assault weapon" after the ban was passed, so that weapons which looked like the banned weapons were also "assault weapons".
