Federal assault weapons ban - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban, or AWB, was a provision of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law of the United States that included a prohibition on the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment.
The ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law's sunset provision.
The features banned by the law, however, were primarily superficial accessories such as bayonet mounts and flash suppressors, so when a weapon is banned as an assault weapon, the gun manufacturers complied with the law by removing the banned items, making the required superficial changes which render it legal again.

Legal Authority of New York City to Ban Audible Car Alarms
Nor is it obviously a ban on an "activity" (such as using a power blower or landing a boat, as discussed in the case law) but is narrowly focused.
However, if the factors articulated in Federico were applied, a ban on alarms would nonetheless likely be sustained given the serious impact of alarm noise, the futility of prior regulation, and the negligible benefits alarms provide their owners and the existence of alternative equipment.
A ban on the operation of car alarms would not be inconsistent, although it would prohibit the operation of alarms that the State does not prohibit.

The Sixth Committee (Legal) this morning began a two-day debate on the controversial issue of cloning with delegations divided over whether an international convention should ban reproductive cloning, of human beings while leaving open the question of human cloning for therapeutic purposes.
He made two proposals:  the holding of a scientific conference next year to produce a more accurate factual picture about the current human cloning technology and its various implications; and secondly, the compilation by the Secretariat of domestic laws and regulations on human cloning to be distributed to all Member States.
He made it clear that should the United Nations proceed to develop a convention banning both therapeutic and reproductive human cloning, the United Kingdom would not participate in the negotiation of such a convention and would not sign up to it.

Vintners' groups are expected to abandon plans to mount a legal challenge against the smoking ban after receiving legal advice indicating there is little chance of a successful action.
The Vintners' Federation of Ireland has been told by three senior legal sources it stands a 40 per cent chance at best of securing an injunction, while there was no guarantee of any success at a full hearing.
The disclosure is a significant boost to Mr Martin's plans to introduce the smoking ban on March 29th.

The current temporary tax ban, which expires this Saturday, was established for a three-year period in 1998 and extended for two more years in 2001.

It is evident to me that the letter writer either doesn't know the legal definition of an assault weapon or she is attempting to mislead readers into the conclusion that the assault weapons ban that expired in September allowed automatic weapons to be sold again, which it did not.
While the so-called "assault weapons" ban was never really at the forefront of the presidential race, we don't need to be reminded of the promise anti-gun forces made that voters would retaliate en masse against President Bush for not actively pushing for the ban's renewal, resulting in a decisive defeat.

The ban was opposed by southern African countries who needed the trade for their citizens' livelihood and they further argued that their elephant populations were not in danger of extinction.
Additionally CITES realized two problems resulting from their ban, that indeed elephants in these countries did not need to be included in Appendix I and that there were major shortfalls in the regulations of ivory trade under the 1990 ban.
The lifting of the ban impacts the three nations directly in that they are able to continue their ivory trade and gain profits to improve their envorinmental conservation efforts.

 Legal Theory Blog
Most contemporary American legal theorists were trained before virtue ethics reached its full flower in the 1980s and 1990s, and many law professors who have broad theoretical interests are only vaguely aware of the substantial impact that virtue ethics has had on contemporary moral philosophy.
This book explores the thesis that legal roles force people to engage in moral combat, an idea that is implicit in the assumption that citizens may be morally required to disobey unjust laws, while judges may be morally required to punish citizens for civil disobedience.
Legal theorists have long thought that the authority of the state--of legislative institutions, regulatory agencies, and the courts--is of the practical sort.

There's simply no way to ban it, except in name alone, because any amendment that says a law can't confer ANY of the "legal incidents" is likely to be an abject failure.

BAN is based in Seattle, USA and conducts both domestic (US) and international programs to halt toxic trade – an ugly form of trade in toxic wastes, toxic products and toxic technologies, that are exported from rich to poorer countries.

BAN works to counter the regressive efforts of these few countries and to once and for all close the sad chapter of toxic colonialism.

New York State's ban on smoking in most workplaces, including bars, restaurants, and company cars and vans, is still standing after a legal challenge by the Empire State Restaurant and Tavern Owners Association.
