Nauruans and Banabans stood by bemused with no idea that their homelands were being carted away for spreading over the fields of the west.
Their immediate concern at the time was the determination of both the British government and the Gilbert Islands administration to incorporate Banaba in the new state of Kiribati (pronounced kiri-bas, a corruption of the word Gilberts) and to use phosphate revenues as a post-independence prop for a nation which had very little else worth selling.
The Banabans are supposed to have a special place in the Kiribati constitution, says David Christopher, 'but we are being treated like any other of their outer islands and we are not like other outer islands'.

Banaban and Tolentino, who have been jailed about six months, were sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Terry Means and could be deported, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported in its Tuesday editions.
Banaban and Tolentino faced up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
Attorneys for Banaban and Tolentino said their clients paid thousands of dollars for documents that they believed were legitimate but turned out to be fake.

The inhabitants, the Banabans, never quite saw the justice of shipping their homeland to Australia in bulk carriers in return for an inadequate number of small pieces of paper termed "Royalties" and were a constant thorn in the side of the British Phosphate Commissioners.
Banaban history has been passed down over the generations in an oral form by Banaban Elders.
The Banaban's folklore had foretold the arrival of such a man or prophet, and the community eagerly adopted this new religion.

The first mentioned in the Banaban traditions were atua, the brother and sister for some say the children of Tabakea the Firstborn and they were followed by anti bearing the same names and later by antimaomata.
But as Nei Beteua was a direct descendant of Anginimaeao we suspect her of a ……..that the Banabans, many of whom were reluctant to change their religion, decided to become Christians in 1885.
Again in 1947, when many of the Banabans went to their island to settle land matters with Maynard of the BPC, who heard that Nei Tituabine mentioned to one of them that she was lonely on Banaba all by herself and would accompany them to Rabi where she would live in future.

The local Banaban chief was not at all impressed with his promises and talk of salvation, however, the new minister was gradually able to introduce some bibles which had been translated into Gilbertese, a similar dialect, giving the Banaban natives their first written language.
The Banaban chiefs and people began to ask a lot of questions from the company management and the British District Commissioner, as to when the Pacific Phosphate Company proposed to restore the land and vegetation and also re-plant their plots with the crops that they had destroyed.
Now the Banaban natives concerns over their treatment by the company and the state of their land, had finally been brought to the attention of the Foreign Office in London where the matter was being questioned in the British Houses of Parliament.

When phosphate mining began in 1900 on Ocean Island in the Gilbert and Ellice Island Colony, the local Banabans were precipitated into a vortex of events which culminated in their resettlement in 1945 on Rambi Island, Fiji, 1,600 miles away.
Although the framework for this study in resettlement and directed change is therefore fairly clear-cut in time and space, the issues are not and the title is no misnomer.
The Banabans and Gwembe Tonga have much in common: both literally lost their land and had no option but to resettle.

The president of the Banaban Landowners Association, Joseph Taratai, says his group is seeking up to $US28 million from the British government.
He claims the British-run Pacific Phosphate Mining Company is now mining at least 650 tonnes of phosphate a year from the former Ocean Island.
He says it is an attempt to exhaust the phosphate and run away, before islanders and their descendents can get a chance to get something in return.

A major source of conflict has been the protracted bid by the residents of Banaban Island to secede and have their island placed under the protection of Fiji.
The government's attempts to placate the Banabans include several special provisions in the constitution, such as the designation of a Banaban seat in the legislature and the return of land previously acquired by the government for phosphate mining.
Phosphates had been profitably exported from Banaban Island since the turn of the century, but the deposits were exhausted in 1979.

I received (Jan 1996) an e-mail from Stacey King (banaban@ion.com.au) in Australia announcing the formation of the Banaban Heritage Society Inc.,., a non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation of Banaban Culture and bettering the lives of the Banaban people.
My own understanding is that the Banabans are racially I-Kiribati, and that their culture (social, linguistic and material) is a simply variant of the I-Kiribati culture albeit more extreme than the normal range of inter-island variation seen within the Gilberts Group.
The Banabans themselves have repeatedly made the case for their separateness from the I-Kiribati, but it should be noted that this claim was intimately tied up with the Banaban independence movements of the 1970's, where what was primarily at issue was the destination of phosphate revenues.

Thought you would like to know that I work with the Banaban people in preserving their history, and we have formed and international network of interested people.
Manabu is completely committed to helping the Banabans, and his documentary should go to air later in the year on national television.
David and Bureimone for the first time in history last year sat down with the K.Gov. and started plans to work together in trying to finally help the Banabans on O.I. This is such an historic first and major event, after years of the BPC pitting the two old former friends against one another.

Of course, attendance at our very Banaban style Conference is not compulsory, and I can assure you there will be plenty of other activities and interests to keep everyone occupied whilst on our Banaba stop over.

I studied a lot on Banaban history from Stacey and libraries here in Japan, and I am well aware of the full extend of Japanese involvement with Banaban history, especially during WW2 years..
The program did however give the general history of the Banabans and mainly focused on the damage done by the BPC (British Phosphate Commission) and how Thomas Teai and his son feel about the way their beloved homeland has been left after 80 years of exploitation by phosphate mining.
It is more importantly a start of reconciliation between Banabans and the Japanese people, and a way in which more Japanese can now get involved in helping the Banabans move towards a better future.

Picked up a bit of information about Banabans on the net for my radio programme and played the cd "Rabi the new home of the Banabans from the Ocean Island" you mentioned during reading about the people and their lost island.
After all, the British Government and the British Phosphate Commission were the ones who took all the phosphate from the Banabans and sending the poor people to migrate to an isolated island called Rabi, in Fiji, which was recently hit by AMI cyclone.
As far as your wife's public messages on the Banaban Message Board are concerned they have been archived along with others for anyone wanting to read them at the link at the bottom of the message board 'More 2003 Messages'.

Since the loss of income from phosphate royalties in 1980, these transplanted Banabans have come to terms with their existence, without dominant British Phosphate Company influence.
Due to the effects of droughts in the early part of 2001, many of the Banabans have resettled on Rabi Island and others have moved to Tarawa or one of the other atolls of Kiribati, spread over an expanse as great as that between Los Angeles and New York.
Today there are currently only about 200 Banabans currently living on their home island.
