The local Limits of the Borough of Banagher extended, on the north-east, to the castle of Streamstown; on the south, to the mearing of the Glebe and Garrycastle; on the south-west, to the bridge of Lusmagh; on the west and north-west, to the Shannon and the Bresna rivers.
The charter gave to the corporation 200 acres of pasture, and 85 acres of wood and moor, to the use of the schoolmaster, "to reside and teach" in the town; and a School was accordingly established.
Banagher is situate on the river Shannon, and has the advantage of a steam Navigation to Limerick and the sea, and also of a water-communication with Athlone, Ballinasloe, and Dublin, which affords it great advantages for trade, and it appears to be an improving town, and possessed of capacity for still further improvement.

Unfortunately, the Banagher distillery was not in operation in 1886 when Barnard made his systematic survey but other evidence would suggest that Banagher could match the combined output of the other three midland distilleries.
The Banagher distillery was sold by the Dublin City and Banagher distilleries Syndicate Ltd and operated for the years 1897 and 1898.
Banagher has always been considered the finest of the Williams maltings and it is hoped to trace its development in a future article.

 Military History
The importance of Banagher as a military position on the Shannon and on the highway from Leinster and Munster to Connaught was early appreciated by the English, whose forces seized it about the middle of the 16th century, apparently coming up the river to do so.
Ultimately the MacCoghlans were overthrown and their lands were planted by order of James I issued in 1621, permission to Sir John Coghlan to retain the town of Banagher being refused on the grounds that it was the remains of an old English fort.
The square tower on the lower side of the bridge at the Galway end was, no doubt, erected to protect the old bridge, as was the Salt Battery, with emplacements for four cannons facing west and north, a few hundred yards from town along the Crank Road.

Banagher old Church stands high on what is left of an ice age drumlin, though much of the sand and gravel have been carried away by now.
Some joker in the 1730s carved the words: "This church was built in ye year of God 474" into the inside of the entrance which, considering that the English language did not exist at the time, was a pretty stupid move.
Originally the buildings were on top of the hill, but long centuries and many burials have raised the ground level considerably, so that now it is several feet higher than the church and mortuary house.

Gardaí at Banagher, Co. Offaly are appealing for witnesses to a fatal traffic accident which occured on Friday 16th May 2003 at Shannonbridge, Co Offaly at 6.05pm.
