  Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge No Entry Zone
The refuge includes almost all of the northern Banana River north of State Road 528, Banana Creek, Canaveral National Seashore and the southern Mosquito Lagoon extending into Volusia County to the north.
Composition of the seagrass community in this portion of the Banana River shifts with extended periods of dry and wet weather, where widgeon grass dominates during periods of wet weather (lower salinity conditions) and the other seagrasses dominate during periods of dry weather (higher salinity conditions).
The northern Banana River is a part of the lands owned in fee title by NASA and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under a Memorandum of Understanding executed June 2, 1972.

The lagoon system is composed of three interconnected water bodies, Mosquito Lagoon to the north, Indian River to the west and Banana River to the east of Merritt Island.
Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River are connected by the man-made Haulover Canal and the Intercoastal Waterway.
The Banana River site is centrally located providing data relevant to potential effects of the surrounding industrial areas as well as providing data specific to the natural temperature and salinity conditions effecting the flora and fauna.

Authorized by the Naval Expansion Act of 1938, NAS Banana River was commissioned October 1, 1940 as a sub-base of NAS Jacksonville.
With the advent of war with Japan and Germany in December 1941, the Navy began anti-submarine patrols along the Florida coast using PBM Mariners based at this facility.
Later in the war, a small detachment of German POWs from Camp Blanding worked at NAS Banana River on cleanup details.

Monday from a boat ramp in the southwest corner of the Banana River which runs through KARS Park I. It is hoped that the manatees will head north through a no-motor zone where they will be safe from injury by boat propellers.
Agencies cooperating in the rescue and release, besides Sea World, are the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The hospital proposes to fill in waters conditionally approved for harvesting shellfish and St. Johns River Water Management District rules prohibit permits for filling this class of waters.
Local residents, a Cocoa Beach City Councilman and the Florida Audubon Society have filed for an administrative hearing with the Water Management District to block the hospital from receiving a permit to fill the lagoon.
