During the coffee period, Bananal experienced the glamour of being one of the richest cities in Brazil, where its farmers guaranteed loans from England to Brazil.
Time went by, coffee was gone and Bananal was left with its wealthy reflected in its people, its values, its traditions, its natural beauty as well as its rich buildings which make the city a cultural area of remarkable value.

The little town of Bananal, founded in 1783, lies in the Paraíba valley, close to the Serra Bocaina and only 16km/10mi from the border of Rio de Janeiro state, 323km/201mi north-east of São Paulo and 145km/90mi north-west of Rio de Janeiro.
Bananal became the wealthiest town in the area and grew so much in importance that in 1829 it sought to become the capital of a new province.
It has managed to preserve the memory of its past wealth, with imposing properties and handsome mansions which recall the heyday of the coffee boom.

We were also presented with a comprehensive guide-book to the trip (64 pp.), arranged in nine sections, discussing various aspects of Pleistocene and recent landform evolution of in SE Brazil.
And Bananal has actually much to offer to a keen visitor, for example there is here an old railway station built of steel plates, unfortunately long disused, lovely colonial buildings dating back to the times of coffee boom, or the old farmacy.
We spent three wonderful days in Bananal, covered a lot of ground, had fun trying to hide from the heavy rain (not at all successful) and took tens of photographs.

Predictive relationships between flooded area and water levels in the nearby rivers allowed extension of the inundation record over nearly a century for the Amazon and Pantanal and several decades for the other floodplains.
Interannual variability in the maximum extent of inundation is greatest in the Pantanal, followed by Roraima and Bananal.
This information is fundamental for hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological studies of these floodplain-river systems and will improve estimates of methane and other trace gas emissions to the atmosphere from these vast wetlands.
