Banbridge workhouse was part of a national system created to tackle the problem of poverty in Nineteenth century Ireland The poor law act of 1838 committed Ireland to following the English example despite the protests of Irish M.Ps of every shade of opinion.
It was built to accommodate a maximum of 800 paupers and served a population of 87, 323 (1841) in an area stretching from Tandragee in the east, Leitrim in the west, Dromore in the north and Glaskermore in the south.
In the late summer the countryside around Banbridge was permeated by the all pervasive stench of rotted flax being lifted out of flax dams, which were at the bottom of the fields.

BANBRIDGE, a market and post-town, in the parish of SEAPATRICK, barony of UPPER IVEAGH, county of DOWN, and province of ULSTER, 10 miles (N. E.) from Newry, and 60 miles (N.) from Dublin city, containing 2469 inhabitants, but since the last census the population has much increased.
This flourishing town was Anciently called Ballyvally, and acquired its present name from the erection of a bridge over the river Bann in 1719, on the formation of a new line of road from Dublin to Belfast.
This is the birth-place of the late Baron M'Clelland, third baron of the Exchequer; and near the town was born Dr. Dickson, Bishop of Down and Connor.

Banbridge CC promoted the third round of the Ulster MTB XC League on Sunday, the County Down Club using Big Wood near Warrenpoint for the first time.
Banbridge's Michael Runciman was second and Epic's Liam Brophy took third,having to ride the last downhill section with a flat front tyre.

Banbridge CC Underage section scooped two major awards on Wednesday night at the Banbridge District Council's annual Junior Sports awards, sponsored by the Bank of Ireland.
This was the first time that the Youth section of the Club have won the coveted Junior Club title, the Club as a whole won the Best Club in the 2005 Banbridge Council Awards, and at the end of 2005 also were named as Club of the Year by Cycling Ulster.
On the Irish racing scene Banbridge CC's young riders are a common sight, with current Champions in both MTB and Road.

Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier was born at Banbridge in September, 1796, being the fifth son of George Crozier, a solicitor and a man of property.
Crozier was appointed 1st Lieutenant of the frigate "Stag" in 1832 and served off the coast of Spain and Portugal until 1835.
He was then able to return to Banbridge for a holiday - and a local crisis.
