		The Banco de Portugal is the central bank of the Republic of Portugal.
		Established by a royal charter of 19 November 1846 to act as a commercial bank and issuing bank, it came about as the result of a merger of the Banco de Lisboa and the Companhia de Confiança Nacional, an investment company specialised in the financing of the public debt.
		Following its nationalisation in September 1974 and its new Organic Law (1975), the Banco de Portugal was, for the first time, responsible for the supervision of the banking system.

		Contrariamente àquilo que o presidente da Associação Portuguesa de Bancos, João Salgueiro, tem afirmado e pretende fazer crer, a percentagem de lucros que a banca entrega ao Estado sob a forma de pagamento de impostos é cada vez menor.
		Portanto, uma taxa muito inferior à taxa de IRC sobre os lucros (em 2004, a taxa de IRC é de 25%, e a taxa efectiva paga pela banca foi apenas de 12,1%).
		Isto é calculado de forma que exista na altura em que cada trabalhador se reforme uma reserva (património) que convenientemente gerida permita pagar ao trabalhador a pensão durante o tempo que viva.
