		Fortuitously, the Bancroft Library, then located on Valencia Street in San Francisco, was the only library of any note that did not burn to the ground during the disaster.
		The purchase of the Bancroft Library signaled the beginning of the university as a research institution.
		The Bancroft Library Centennial celebrates not only the survival of the core collections and their arrival on campus but the library's evolution as the busiest and most-accessible special-collections library in the country.

		Melville Dewey, then secretary of the public library department of the University of the State of New York, signed the certificate of registry, dated February 14, 1896.

		Today the Bancroft Library's collection has grown to almost 55 million items (600,000 bound volumes, 3.5 million pictorial items, and an astonishing 50 million manuscripts) and has become one of the most widely used research collections of its kind in the United States.

		Here from 1881-1906 stood the library of Hubert Howe Bancroft who in 1860 began to collect the wealth of material which was to subsequently result in the writing of his monumental history of western North America.
