Bancroft Public Library in Salem was opened December 5, 1891.
Melville Dewey, then secretary of the public library department of the University of the State of New York, signed the certificate of registry, dated February 14, 1896.
Located on the seconed floor of the Proudfit Building on Salem's Main Street, the library was named for Benjamin F. Bancroft, banker and benefactor of the community during the middle and late 1800's.

Bancroft (1832 – 1918) began his career as a bookseller in San Francisco in 1852, and later established a business which grew to become the largest book and stationery business west of Chicago.
Today the Bancroft Library's collection has grown to almost 55 million items (600,000 bound volumes, 3.5 million pictorial items, and an astonishing 50 million manuscripts) and has become one of the most widely used research collections of its kind in the United States.
The Bancroft Library at 100 also includes a volume of work by the greatest dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age, Lope de Vega, a rare volume of the complete works of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and a copy of Cicero’s Discourse on Old Age, printed in 1744 by Benjamin Franklin.

 California Landmark 791: Original Site of the Bancroft Library in San Francisco
Here from 1881-1906 stood the library of Hubert Howe Bancroft who in 1860 began to collect the wealth of material which was to subsequently result in the writing of his monumental history of western North America.
In 1905, the library was purchased by the University of California and removed the following year to its Berkeley campus.

As a Friend you will become identified with the work of this great library and be kept in touch with its activities through the lively newsletter Bancroftiana.
