The name 'Band Aid' was chosen as a pun on the name of a well known brand of sticking plaster, since it also refers to musicians working as a band to provide aid.
In 2004, a third line-up, known as Band Aid 20, re-recorded the single for the 20th anniversary of the project.
The Band Aid 20 single was first played simultaneously on the The Chris Moyles Show (on BBC Radio One) and the breakfast shows on Virgin and Capital radio, at 8am on 16 November 2004.

The interesting thing about Band Aid 20 is not the squabble over who got to sing the Bono line, but the whole commentator industry that has sprung up around it.
A brief trawl through the internet and I find several blog entries about the song (here, here, here, and here) an amusing recount of what happened to Band Aids 3-19 (oddly, the 1989 SAW-stars collaboration seems to have been erased from charity record history) and the WDM's own slightly more po-faced rewritings of the lyrics.
If we give handouts every 20 years or so, then there's no need to feel bad about how cheap our unfairly traded food is. Not to mention that part of our economy is based on arms sales, often to despotic regimes who are not particularly interested in ensuring famine is eradicated.

20 years after the original recording, Midge Ure and Bob Geldof had decided that it was time to re-record the song for a third time.
Additional tracks added to the single are the original line-up, and a track recorded directly from the Live Aid concert at the finale.
This replaced cover has a similar feel to the original Band Aid release which was don by Peter Blake.

You want this record to succeed, because you feel for the plight of the refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan and this project is funding aid projects on their behalf.
The acts on the list for this new disc so far cannot be said to be cutting edge like those on Band Aid 20, so it reeks of bandwagon-jumping and career-boosting in the most vile sense.
Band Aid 20 made sense because people weren't donating enough to help in Darfur, and probably still aren't.

On Saturday November 13 the core instrumentation of the track was recorded by a band comprised of Thom Yorke (pianos), Justin and Dan Hawkins (guitars) and Paul McCartney (bass), while the producer Nigel Godrich started to piece together previously recorded vocal contributions from Robbie Williams, Dido and Bono from U2.

The thing that amzes me is that Bono apparently fought long and hard to be able to sing the line "Tonight thank God it's them instead of you" for Band Aid 20..
For the Band Aid 20 single, due out on November 29, the star has changed his delivery of the line.
I also managed to here the band Aid 2 version a couple of times too (Jason Donovan singing "tonight thank god it's them" and Him out of Bros doing "Instead of you"?...

whenever they try to recreate band aid they fail miserably, no matter who is involved.
After a few listens Band Aid 20 is a little easier on the ear (except maybe for Dizzy Rascal reciting his shopping list near the end

I think the ‘Coventry Carol’ is probably a superior piece of music to Band Aid 20, when all’s said and done.
I’m told that the whooping and clapping at the end of the song is mostly Snow Patrol, so Band Aid 20 is at least notable for recording the band’s very first emotion.
It seems that Apple won’t be selling Band Aid 20 via the iTunes store - apparently they’re unhappy that they’d have to raise the price of the track from the usual 79p.

Performed this time by Band Aid 20, so named because it is 20 years since the release of the original recording, the release also features the original recording from 1984.
When Bob was closing down the original trust in 1992, he said that the idea of Band Aid was to open the avenues of possibilities, and that in the future there must be new band aids, in different ways, which is whey this re-tread somewhat misses the point.
It's a very emotional watch and really pushes home the reason for the whole thing in the first place, unlike the recent display of 'talent', some of who couldn't even be bothered to turn up in person.

You'd think that 20 years later they'd realize that not everyone in the world celebrates Christmas, and that most of the people the song will supposedly benefit are not even remotely Christian.
It's a bit twisted too when you realize that the monies raised are supposedly for the Sudanese.
