Simply Audiobooks - Band Of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Band of Brothers is the account of the men of this remarkable unit who fought, went hungry, froze, and died, a company that took 150 percent casualities and considered the Purple Heart a badge of office.
They were a "Band of Brothers," but the author spent most of the time describing the battles and not developing the relationships between the soldiers that made one feel they were actually brothers.
I was a little let down by this book, not because of the book itself but because of this particular narrator.

It was the first musical meeting of the group, which—with the addition of Duane’s younger brother Gregory Allman on vocals and Hammond organ—would become The Allman Brothers Band—one of the most acclaimed and influential groups in the history of rock and roll.
The originators of a sound that continues to this day, they spawned a host of bands that drew on their model—proving only that the genius of the ABB could be imitated, but never duplicated.
On their first four classic recordings—The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, At The Fillmore East, and Eat A Peach—the ABB perfected a sound that effortlessly combined rock, blues, country and jazz on such unforgettable original tunes as "Dreams," "Revival," "Midnight Rider," "Melissa," and "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed." By 1971, they were poised for super-stardom.

As the book reports "By this time, about 0700, E Company consisted of two light machine-guns, one bazooka (no ammunition), one 60mm mortar, nine rifleman, and two officers." Lt. Winters was in charge.
The book next describes the Company's jump into Holland, near the Rhine River, where they fought through November of 1944, and then on to Bastogne, to again become front line troops in the historic Battle of the Bulge.

Book Review: We Band of Brothers
I picked this book up with some trepidation having originally confused Peppy Blount with "Pappy" Gunn who had revolutionized the use of the B-25 Mitchell bomber as a strafing platform.
I mentioned that I had enjoyed the book to another 345th BG veteran who told me Blount thought he had won the war on his own.
Blount's book certainly gives an insight into just how important it was to be a very good pilot in order to bring your plane and crew back from their missions.

The book is well written, with Ambrose setting out the events of each day/engagement/battle/incident, and then using quotes and excerpts from other books and memoirs to illustrate how it was for the actual men in those incidents.
Prominent amongst these is Band of Brothers, Ambrose's study of the unusually close bond formed between soldiers of the Easy Company of the 101st Airborne in the Second World War.
One of the strengths of the book is how Ambrose takes advantage of the dual perspective of his sources, who not only recall what they were doing and thinking during World War II, but also what their thoughts are today about what happened back then.

Band of Brothers is based on the 1992 best-seller by distinguished historian and author Dr. Stephen E. Ambrose.
Noting the recent revival of interest in World War II - books, films and television projects, Ambrose attributes the phenomenon to two factors: the veterans themselves, and America’s changing attitude about its history.
In the case of the veterans, he notes, "many are realising that they don’t have much time left and many, for the first time, are willing to talk about their experiences.
