Interview with Robert Poss   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
He was in some blues bands early on, and later embraced the punk and post-punk aesthetic in bands like Tot Rocket and Western Eyes.
Although outnumbered by splendiferous Susans in the band, Robert was the driving force of the guitar-writing, with other cofounder Susan Stenger sharing the singing, songwriting, and the all-over sound and fury of the band.
Band of Susans developed quite a name for themselves, and put records out on such labels as Blast First, Rough Trade Germany and Restless.

Listen too close to Band Of Susans' three-pronged guitar attack, with its sky-scraping walls of distortion and feedback repeated through a few simple chords ad infinitum, and their towering white-noise takes on a surreal, fascinating intensity.
Band Of Susans are the soundtrack for an epileptic fit, a lapse that feels like being seized by divine powers.

Getting their start on the low-budget amphetamine reptile record label, the band recorded a couple of songs for compilations and the seminal 'born annoying/ rumble' ep, which is now unavailable, before setting to work on their debut album.
This time around, the band was not held back by poor recording quality as they corrode and blast through with favourites like "in the meantime", "ironhead", "give it", "he feels bad", "fbla" and their first big single, "unsung".
Rumors about the band spun around in October that an album would be put out, but on the cusp of its release, the band decided to pull the album to re-record, re-produce and re-mix the album.

Formed by avant-garde flautist Susan Stenger and guitarist Robert Poss, Band of Susans was a rock band without the rock clichés….
The band's name came from the trio of Susans in the group's original line-up: Stenger on bass and Susans Tallman and Lyall on guitars.
By the time the Susans' 1991 tribute to the E chord - entitled The Word And The Flesh - was released, guitarists Mark Lonergan and Anne Husick had replaced Haglof and Hamilton.

Their first album and subsequent shows attest to a startling evolution as the band repeatedly reinvented itself.
Morex Optimo was introduced to Martin Bisi, who had a long history working with some of New York's most influential bands and artists, (among them Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, Bill Laswell), who immediately agreed to help them record their first project.
With producer Jay Braun (Band of Susans, The Negatones, Kapow, Mooney Suzuki) stepping in with a strong directorial hand, and Yuri departing the band, the band moved into a more focused, direct approach to their material.

Indeed, the Susans' signature "wall" of densely-layered, intense guitar sound is to be heard throughout the entire discography, from the very first notes of 1987's Blessing and Curse EP all the way through the numerous releases that followed (culminating with 1995's Here Comes Success).

This five-song ep is a pretty swank introduction to the band: not long, but with enough songs to get across their diversity of sound.
Their experimentation with form and integration of electronic elements are simultaneously courageous and stylish, and they have the instrumental skill to successfully harmonize their prog-rock ambitions with their very infectious sense of humor.

The band viewed the name as something of an albatross toward the end of the band's career, and Robert has said at least once that if he could go back and begin with a different name, he would.
Despite the occasional appearance of people recruited to fill holes during tours, the band had only three formal lineups in its nine-year history, and over half of that time (from 1990-1995) was with the final lineup of R obert Poss (guitar), Susan Stenger (bass), Ron Spitzer (drums), Anne Husick (guitar), and Mark Lonergan (guitar).

The guitar builds intensity throughout the song, gathering substantial steam, but bassist Susan Stenger's throaty vocals cannot do justice to the song, and the instrumental version suffers from the absence of Jagger's haunting lyrics.
