BANDA ISLANDS, a group of the Dutch East Indies, consisting of three chief and several lesser islands in the Banda Sea, south of Ceram, belonging to the residency of Amboyna.
Gunong Api (Fire Mountain), 2200 ft. high, is an active volcano, and its eruptions and earthquakes have frequently brought destruction, as notably in 1852, when the damage was chiefly due to a huge wave of the sea.
Banda, the chief town, on Neira, is a pleasant settlement, commanded by two Dutch forts of the early 17th century, Nassau and Belgica.

The Banda Islands (Indonesian: Kepulauan Banda) are a group of ten small volcanic islands in the Banda Sea, about 140km south of Seram island and about 2000km east of Java, and are part of the Indonesian province of Maluku.
The descendants of some of the Bandanese who fled Dutch conquest in the seventeenth century live in the Kai Islands (Kepulauan Kei) to the east of the Banda group, where a version of the original Banda language is still spoken in the villages of Banda Eli and Banda Elat on Kai Besar Island.
Banda is the Blessed Land: sacred practice and identity in the Banda Islands, Maluku.

The view across to the ubiquitous Gung Api from the Mesjid Jami in Salamon is worth the trip in itself, and, along the way, one also finds two other tiny forts (Salamon and Kota), very much overgrown and largely hidden in the trees.

On Banda Besar Island, Earthwatch crews excavated two units in the highlands in the center of the island, both of which had sparse cultural deposits of shallow depth.
The work on Banda Besar remains inconclusive however, as there probably was a considerable population living on other parts of the island, despite the fact that we did not find rich sites.
Thanks also to Syukani Thalib and his students at Banda's SMU 1 high school for their hard work in preparing the museum exhibit, and Des Alwi and Yayasan Warisan dan Budaya Banda Naira for providing the space for the exhibit and arranging the opening ceremonies.
