Thrint. Who is Thrint? What is Thrint? Where is Thrint? Definition of Thrint. Meaning of Thrint.
The Thrintun settled huge amounts of the galaxy, seeding many planets with basic life forms (created for them by one of their controlled species, the Tnuctipun) to use as food sources.
Once the photocycle was established, larger animals known (to humans) as the Bandersnatchi were introduced in an example of interstellar cattle-farming.
Humans evolved from one such planet, which was abandoned when the Thrintun culture was destroyed, after photosynthesis had started, but before the Bandersnatchi had been moved in.

Unknown to the Thrintun, the Bandersnatchi were created sentient, as spies, and immune to telepathy.

The bandersnatchi -- Scruffy, Peewee, Muffin and Cujo -- were apparently none too pleased with my treatment of their comrade, because all four of them ignored Jack and Destiny Lad and came straight for me. I ducked behind some barrels, which went up in flames seconds later.
The bandersnatchi had paired off and were lumbering around to either side of me in hopes of boxing me in.
The bandersnatchi were within ten feet on either side of me. If one of them so much as sneezed, I was a well-done dead man. I grabbed the sword off the ground and shouted, "Who dies first?" Besides me, that was.

Actually, the Bandersnatchi are more like large snails, which are multicellular organisms.
IIRC, the problem with a giant single-celled organism is that the strength of the cell wall doesn't grow as fast as the pressure from the organism's mass, so it would be sea-dwelling only.
