 Encyclopedia: Bandersnatchi
In Larry Niven's fictional Known Space universe, the Bandersnatchi are colossal sluglike creatures.
Unknown to the Thrintun, the Bandersnatchi were created sentient, as spies, and immune to telepathy.
Fortunately, Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" (Fit the Seventh) settles some of these questions: in an encounter with a bandersnatch it is described as moving swiftly, having a neck it can extend, and having snapping, frumious jaws, which with it tries to grab the Banker.

Larry Niven also has intelligent food animals populating his Known Space: the Bandersnatchi of Jinx, who were the sole survivors of the Tnuctipun Rebellion.
What is the difference between doing that, and preaching to a bunch of subs that they should end the abuse, and become doms (or leave the scene entirely)?
However, the Thrint who ate them didn't know that the Bandersnatch (whitefoods) were intelligent.
