  THE BANDONEON
The bandoneon is the last step of the evolution of the series of portable reed wind instruments, like the accordion and the concertina.
There is a version about the origin of the bandoneon, which says that it was invented as a replacement for the organs in small churches that couldn’t afford the expense of an organ, or as a portable instrument to accompany funeral processions.
The factory that produced bandoneons, owned by Zimmerman, was bought in the 1860’s by Ernest Louis Arnold, and since the beginning of the 20th Century most of his bandoneons (ELA) and the ones made by his son Alfred Arnold (AA) were exported to Argentina, with the name of Bandoneon.

With a makeup of two bandoneons, two violins, double bass, cello, piano, and an electric guitar, he produces innovative works and interpretations which break away from classic tango, he breaks away from the original mold of an “orquesta tipica&; and creates chamber music instead, music without a singer or any dancers.
The breath of the bandoneon, the shuffling scrape of the bow on the cello, the shriek of the violin, the moan of the bass, the incessant rhythm of the piano; they speak fluently and directly of love and lust, pain and passion.
The bandoneons, the heart and voice of the tango, lead the other instruments in the sextet with the pulsating force of the canyengue: the fierce rhythm characteristic of this musical style.

Bandoneons aren't quite as regional a phenomenon in the US, although activity does seem to be centered in large urban areas on the two coasts, especially in New York City and San Francisco.
Both Bandoneons and Chemnitzers feature a variety of possible voicings, button arrangements, and fingering systems, with Bandoneons generally having more buttons.
Prices tend to be very high for instruments in good condition, and Bandoneons in particular are very hard to find in this country, as they are not made here, and nearly all the high-end used ones are already in the hands of players.

Fourteen dancers showed their stuff in a program which gives a brief history of the tango from its beginnings in brothels with links to organized crime, to its acceptance in Paris salons and by the Argentinian middle class, further on to its union with classical European music forms and ballet.

 Quality Criteria for a Bandoneon
The absolute tuning of bandoneons is usually at a = 445 Hz, somewhat higher than other instruments.
Something different, and easier to check is the tuning in respect to the octave: Different from other reed instruments the bandoneon is tuned absolutely even, that is the octave tone is exactly one octave higher.
Because of the pressure dependence of the pitch (the higher the pressure the lower the pitch) the variation of pitch for both reeds with pressure should be coherent.

As one of the few real tango orchestras outside Argentina, and with its very own style, the sextet's two bandoneons, two violins, piano and double-bass was a throw back to the orchestral tradition of the instrumental tango music from Rio de la Plata in Buenos Aires.
For Tango Real, meeting and playing together with such well-known tango musicians as Rodolfo Mederos or Nestor Marconi is just as important as the communication with the audience, whether at tango balls, concert halls or major tango festivals.

Since the right and left hand keyboards are also different, this adds up to four different keyboard layouts that must be learned in order to play the instrument.
There is also a difference between the notes produced on the button layout of an Argentine-tuned bandoneon versus a German-tuned one.
A few of the adjacent buttons form triads, for example the buttons under three adjacent fingers might sound G, B, and D when the instrument is pushed in, and F#, A, and C when it is pulled out -- an example from an Argentine-tuned bandoneon.
