Diabolus in Musica Guide to Early Instruments - The Cittern and Bandora   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The bandora and orpharion were born - the first mainly used as a rich bass instrument in consorts, the second as a solo instrument.
This consisted of flute (or recorder), violin (or treble viol), bass viol, cittern, bandora, and a lute improvising gratuitously complex divisions.
That's not a problem, except that there are whole websites devoted to the cittern, created by enthusiastic folks who firmly believe that the modern cittern and the renaissance one are closely related, and pretty much different versions of the same instrument.

A plucked string instrument of the English Renaissance belonging to the lute family.
The bandora is a bass register instrument with six or seven metal strings, a long, fretted neck, and a scalloped body.
During the 16th and 17th centuries it had a large solo repertory and was used to accompany some of the earliest printed English songs.

 Lutes & Guitars | Wire-strung instruments
Orpharions and bandoras are strung with plain iron and brass in the treble, with closely-overspun copper on brass for the bass courses; the citterns are strung with plain iron and brass with twisted brass for the bass courses.
The orpharion and bandora were very popular with lutenists of the Elizabethan and early Stuart periods, as can be deduced from the title pages of printed music of the time.
John Rose is generally accepted as having invented the bandora and orpharion early in the reign of Elizabeth I, as an entry in J. Stow's Annales, or a general Chronicle of England (1631, p.869) testifies:

Tablatures for the Lute, Guitar, and Vihuela
Most of these sources were written for the lute, vihuela, or guitar.
There were also a few books for one of four lesser-known instruments: the cittern, the bandora, the mandora, and the orpharion.
Almost all of these books employ a notational system called "tablature" and most were written for amateur performance at home.

We begin this article from Bandora as known in yesteryears, now called Bandra, because it is not only the Queen of Mumbai's suburbs but it is also our home, from where we have gone almost to all well-known places in the world.
Whenever we return from our trips, we go to the balcony of our home on Mount Mary Road opposite Arabian Sea and mentally see the shores of Arabia in the far horizons and remember "Home sweet home, there is no place like home"

Heringman is very effective with the lute pieces, but in an attempt to provide contrasts, he strays to a particularly scratchy-sounding cittern and a rather bland bandora for several tracks.
A viol is also added in a couple of places, but this has a rather sour quality to it.

 The Irish Harp in England
The Ayres and Dialogues and Mottects or Grave Chamber Musique of Martin Peerson, issued in London in 1620 and 1630 respectively, seem to be the only published works which mention it by name.
It is given on the title page of the Mottects along with virginals, bass-lute and bandora as an alternative 'for want of organs'—not, one suspects, a highly practical alternative—and it is mentioned in the composer's foreword to the Ayres and Dialogues.
