 Special Report: DRC - 8 November 2000
Many farms have been abandoned and some agro-industrial companies, notably in the Bas-Congo and Bandundu provinces, have but ceased all activities, while perennial crops on estates have reverted to bush, and feeder roads for which they were responsible have fallen into disrepair.
However, antiquated equipment and lack of locomotives (only 4 are now in operation, whereas 10 would be the minimum needed) have rendered rail transport unreliable, reduced its transport share (as against road transport) from about 70 percent some 10 years ago to less than 30 percent presently, despite the disastrous state of road transport.
With supplies from Bandundu and Bas-Congo hampered by bad road conditions, per capita beef consumption in Kinshasa has decreased from 7.5 kg to 3 kg in the last two years, according to SNSA.

Population, Land Use, and the Environment
Although there has been outmigration from Bandundu to Kinshasa, and migration of rural residents to the province's urban areas, the rural population has continued to grow.
This intensification was encouraged not only by population growth within the province, but also by improved access to the Kinshasa market dating back to the late 1970s when a major paved road linking the province to the capital was completed.
As with the Bandundu case study, these changes in land use raise serious questions about environmental degradation and sustainability of food crop production (cf., impact on mountain gorillas).

Even at the city of Bandundu (20 000 adult habitants and 60 000 young people under eighteen), the village is still the dominant point of central spiritual reference.
The dark, nocturnal feature of African religion found in the Congolese rural zone is the belief in evil beings and persons who are not devils (fallen angels) or disguised satanic creatures, but beings, supposed to be dangerous sorcerers, fatal for the life of the people.
