Banff Crag & Canyon — A spokesperson for the Banff Television Festival says “it’s full steam ahead” for the famed event, after an emotional week that included the festival’s ownership filing for bankruptcy, the laying off of its workforce and selling its assets to a Toronto-based events and investment firm.
Festival spokesperson Sarah Pearson said they’ve been assured by the festival’s new owners, Achilles Partners LLP, that the Banff Television Festival is going ahead as scheduled.
The festival, which is slated for June 13-17 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

This is, after all, the famed 25-year-old festival that almost didn't take place this year after the cash-strapped and debt-ridden Banff Television Foundation was forced to file for bankruptcy protection.
Festival attendance was also down this year--1,300 compared to last year's 1,600 and a record high two years ago of over 1,800.
The Banff Masters workshops were an opportunity to sit back and hear from those at the top of their game like Sex and the City executive producers/writers Jenny Bicks and Cindy Chupack, who talked about mining one another's personal life for material for the show.

Funding, or the Canadian Television Fund lack thereof, notwithstanding, the influx of Banff 2003's 1,800 delegates into the happy mountain town was an event happily welcomed by the locals who have been acutely aware of how tourism has been affected by the weakened U.S. dollar.
But Banff 2003 is a Canadian festival to the core and the volume level of said murmurings never reached a distinct level.

John Cleese says the sketches and characters that made him a comic legend may never have been written in today's television industry, where shows are cancelled after two episodes if they don't grab an audience or are nixed outright for being too edgy.
Cleese, who splits his time between England and California, says the only good places to work are HBO and Canadian television, which he believes still feels it has a public service ethos.
