  Alex Salmond — SNP - Scottish National Party
He was first elected as MP for Banff and Buchan in 1987 and was elected as National Convener for the Scottish National Party in 1990.
He served as leader of the opposition in the Scottish Parliament when he was elected MSP for Banff and Buchan constituency in 1999.
He was re-elected as Leader of the SNP in 2004 and elected as MSP for the Gordon constituency in May 2007.

  Banff and Buchan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Banff and Buchan was formerly a local government district in the Grampian Region of Scotland.
Created in the local government reorganistion of 1975, it combined the Aberdeenshire district of Buchan with the town of Banff and its surrounding portion of the county of Banffshire (the rest of Banffshire became part of the Moray district in the Highland region).
The area is still used as the Banff and Buchan British parliamentary constituency and the Banff and Buchan Scottish parliamentary constituency.

Lord Steel of Aikwood (Liberal MSP for the Lothians) is elected as Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament by 82 votes against 44 for George Reid (Scottish National Party MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife).
Responsibility for the Scottish parliament construction project is transferred from the Secretary of State for Scotland to the Scottish Parliament Corporate Body, headed by the Presiding Officer, Lord Steel of Aikwood.
The Scottish parliament assumes its powers when it is officially opened by the Queen of Scots in the presence of the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Rothesay and the Scots Crown.

The periodic changes to parliamentary constituencies south of the border are on their way, but will not occur until the election 2009/10 so for now the number of seats in the Commons will be reduced from 659 to 646, with the figure required for an overall majority falling to 324 seats.
The Boundary Commission of Scotland's work in reducing the number of constituencies now means that electorates in most seats have increased to the average size of electorates in England, at least for the time being, and goes someway to answering the critics who point to Scotland's disproportionate presence in the UK Parliament.
Some sitting Members of Parliament, faced with the prospect of a contest with parliamentary colleagues to become the party's candidate in a new seat, decided that discretion was the better part of valour' and chose to stand down.

All the same, it is important to place the case for a Scottish parliament in its proper international context, as well as to argue for it in terms of Scotland's own historical, economic, political and cultural circumstance.
That means a Parliament in which men and women are fairly represented in numbers broadly proportionate to their shares of the population, and which actively encourages the participation and involvement of all groups, including ethnic minority groups, in its consultative processes.
