The bang migrates to the rivers for spawning and, since it is one of the most abundant east coast food fishes, is of great economic importance.
Bang (SS 385) was laid down on 30 April 1943 at Kittery, Maine, by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; launched on 30 August; sponsored by Mrs.
Bang reached her station that same day but spent an uneventful week while Admiral Spruance's 5th Fleet was trouncing the Japanese task force in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, virtually wiping out the enemy's naval air capability for the remainder of the war.

USS Bang, a 1526-ton Balao class submarine built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, was commissioned in December 1943.
Bang's second patrol was made in support of the June 1944 Saipan invasion and continued on to the Formosa area, where she attacked many Japanese ships but gained no confirmed sinkings.
USS Bang was transferred to Spain at the beginning of October 1972, a loan that was converted to a sale in November 1974.

When she failed to make a transmission, USS Bang (SS 385) was sent to make the search and rendezvous with Snook.
Although Bang arrived and rescued the downed aviators, she saw nothing of the missing submarine and on 16 May 1945 USS Snook, credited with sinking 17 enemy vessels in her two and one-half years of active service, was presumed lost after 8 April 1945, the victim of unknown causes.

In 1943 CAPT Fox applied for submarine duty, and after completing submarine school in New London and marrying his college sweetheart Reba, he served on the submarines R-14 and R-20 operating from Key West, Florida.
CAPT Fox served as Engineering Officer and acting Executive Officer on Bang and conducted war patrols from Brisbane and Pearl Harbor during which Bang sank several Japanese ships and bombarded a Japanese held oil refinery in Indonesia.
Bang was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for her superior performance against the enemy.

She was placed in commission 24 October, 1942 under the command of LCDR C.O. On completion of shakedown training off the New England coast, she left New London, Connecticut on 3 March, 1943 enroute to the Pacific, arriving in Pearl Harbor on 30 March, 1943.
On 20 April, 1945 the British carrier task force commander reported one of his carrier planes downed in the station assigned to SNOOK and stated he was unable to contact her by radio.
BANG was dispatched to the area where she rescued three British aviators but saw no sign of SNOOK.

He returned to the United States in May 1943 to assume command of the new Balao-class submarine USS Parche (SS-384), which he commissioned in November and brought out to the Pacific early in 1944.
Parche departed Pearl Harbor on her first war patrol in March 1944, teamed with USS Bang (SS-385) and USS Tinosa (SS-283) to form a "wolf pack" preying on Japanese shipping in the Luzon Strait, between Taiwan and the northern Philippines.
After several unsuccessful pursuits, Parche drew her first blood on 4 May in a joint attack on a Japanese convoy in which two sinkings were credited to Ramage and his men, for a total of 11,700 tons.

The Bang was a Guppy IIA when I served on her from July 1961 to December 1962.
While aboard Bang, which was home ported at State Pier in New London, Connecticut, she completed a four-month cruise to the Mediterranean which was modified to be a European 'Good Will' cruise.
I reenlisted for six years while at sea and left Bang as an RM2(SS), heading to RM "B" School in Bainbridge, Maryland.

 Biography
When the Marshall went into the yard at Bremerton, WA, for adaptation to the next generation of missile, I was transferred to the USS Bang, SS 385, a WW II diesel boat.
A few years later Bang was retired permanently and scrapped.
I was fortunate to receive from the Chief of the Boat a short piece of her teakwood deck while at our crew reunion in 2001.
