BANGKOK, 7 April (UN Information Service) -- In an important development that could have a profound impact on regional trade relations in Asia and the Pacific and possibly in the rest of the international trading system, China formally acceded to the Bangkok Agreement earlier this week.
The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Agreement, Bangladesh’s M.A. Kamal, made the announcement at the end of the sixteenth session of the Committee which met in Bangkok 3 to 5 April.
The Bangkok Agreement, signed in 1975 as an initiative of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), is a preferential tariff arrangement that aims at promoting intra-regional trade through exchange of mutually agreed concessions by member countries.

Padmanabhaiah flew to Amsterdam as the situation in Manipur became alarming in the wake of the agreement, with protesters demanding that the ceasefire be confined to Nagaland.

A meeting of immigration officials from 10 Asean countries agreed in principle yesterday to work towards making the region a visa-free zone for their citizens in a bid to promote intra-Asean tourism.
Mr Ahmad said the visa-free travel agreement has been in place for six of the 10 Asean countries _ Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
The visa-free zone agreement would help strengthen not only tourism but also other areas of cooperation, he said.
