Bangkok’s newest mass transit system, the subway, is to open on 3 July 2004, one month ahead of schedule.
All the subway stations are air-conditioned and well equipped with elevators, escalators, shops, ATM machines, public telephone kiosks and ticket vending machines which accept both notes and coins as well as return change.
Moreover, the MRTA has also co-operated with the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), operator of the city bus service, to link seven subway stations with 18 bus lines for commuters who live in the suburbs and do not always wish to take their cars.

All subway services in the city were suspended pending an investigation.

This is my own graphic of the subway route, showing the renamed stations and the interchanges to the BTS Skytrain.
Inside the new subway train is very similar to the Skytrain, except for the blue seats and far less straps to hold on to, and none in the door areas, something of a mistake in my opinion.
Personally, I think the attention the subway is getting is a little unfair as the Skytrain suffered similar minor problems when it started, and occasionally still does, although they have never crashed it and injured people.........

Bangkok Metro signed a 350 million euro ($311.1 million) contract with Siemens on Dec. 19 after securing 11.15 billion baht ($254 million) for the project from four Thai banks, Sombat said.
The subway is expected to begin partial service in mid-2003 and full commercial service is expected to be in 2004, according to Bangkok Metro.
