  BANGLAPEDIA:
Banglapedia, the national encyclopedia of Bangladesh, represents the fulfillment of over six years of effort made by scores of intellectuals who joined the endeavour as planners, organisers, contributors, reviewers, editors, translators, researchers, designers, technicians, fund raisers, and so on.
For convenience of readers who may wish to use the Banglapedia as an introduction to an understanding of major issues and events of the past and present of Bangladesh such as history, archaeology, religion, agriculture, floods, health, environment, language, literature, etc. many general survey articles that are of considerable length have been incorporated.
It was also in their mind to get Banglapedia written by specialists best able to explain the finer aspects of their subjects, experts who could impart to the encyclopedia the distinctive aspects of the land and people of Bangladesh, both from historical and contemporary perspectives.

New Age New Year Special 2006
In 2002, days before it was to appear in print, Banglapedia, the ten volume encyclopaedia that holds information pertaining to Bangladesh, ran into serious trouble with a vested quarter of intellectuals and the media and was almost pulled off production.
The editors of Banglapedia were accused of tampering with history, and a section of the nay-sayers blamed Professor Sirajul Islam, chief editor of Banglapedia, of showing contempt towards the prophet Muhammad.
In 1991, Sirajul Islam served as the editor of Asiatic Society’s three volume series The History of Bangladesh which dealt with the political, economic and social and cultural history of the land from 1704 to 1971.
