The Bangor Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1896, is the oldest continually operating symphony orchestra in the United States.
Bangor is the hometown of Hannibal Hamlin, who served as Abraham Lincoln's vice president, and of William Cohen, U.S. Senator and Secretary of Defense under Bill Clinton.

Bangor is situated in the southern part of Penobscot County, on the Penobscot River, about 60 miles from the sea and 30 from the head of the hay, and has a harbor deep enough to goat the largest vessels.
Bangor is a central point of departure for Mount Desert, the Provinces, and Katahdin and the Maine Wilderness.
In 1814, however, Bangor was taken possession of by a British force, ten vessels were burned; stores, othces and deserted dwellings were pillaged; and the inhabitants were rudely, and in some cases, outrageously treated.

In the mid 1830s, Bangor was home to more than 300 sawmills, earning the city the undisputed title "Lumber Capital of the World." Lumberjacks harvested the northern Maine woods and sent their logs down the Penobscot River where they were picked up by runners in Bangor.
Bangor's prosperity in the lumber industry began to fade in the late 1800s, though, as Americans began to settle farther west and harvest trees in other forest-rich states such as Minnesota and Oregon.
Although Bangor has no direct connection to the Spanish-American War, the shield and scroll of the Battleship Maine is on display at Davenport Park while this cannon from a Spanish galleon is on display at Kenduskeag Parkway, downtown between State and Central streets.

The first Maine men to see action in the Civil War, their ranks were decimated from 1,288 men in 1861 to 400 men in 1863 by ten major battles.
Erected in the spring of 1864 to commemorate all of Bangor's Civil War dead, this monument became the first such memorial to be built in the United States.
Bangor architect designed Penobscot County Courthouse, YMCA, the gymnasium at Bangor Theological Seminary complete with a basement bowling alley, the Superintendent's building here at Mt. Hope Cemetery and numerous schools and homes in the area.
