The province of Abra occupies the western portion of the Cordillera region in northern Luzon.
It is bounded on the north by Kalinga-Apayao, on the east by Isabela, on the west by Abra and Ilocos Sur, and on the south by Benguet and Ifugao.
Abra's inhabitants are mostly descendants of Ilocano settlers and members of the Tingguian tribe.

BANGUED, Abra -- In time for next week's school opening, the typewriters promised by various donors to campus journalists in remote towns of Abra have been turned over to their beneficiaries.
Antonio Ruyan, editor in chief of the Catholic church-run Abra Today, said Abra school paper advisers, in a recent seminar-workshop, revealed that one of the major problems of their staff members was the lack of typewriters.
Abra Rep. Luis Bersamin and his United States-based sister donated two portable typewriters, while a defunct typing school in Metro Manila donated seven used typewriters.

Health officials blamed the outbreak to contaminated water from illegal connections with the Bangued Water District (BWD) and one of the town’s water refilling stations that tested positive of the Escherichia coli bacteria that causes the dreaded disease.
Bangued’s rural sanitary inspectors and midwives collected 14 samples from different areas from faucets and refilling stations of Bangued that were sent to San Fernando City for laboratory analysis.
Due to the findings, the health department asked the Sanggu­niang Bayan (SB, or municipal council) of Bangued to pass an ordinance requiring all refilling stations and the BWD to conduct regular water analysis and provide result to the local health authorities, as well as supervise improvement and maintenance of other water sources such as deepwells.
