The banjolele (brand name; sometimes banjo ukulele or banjo uke) is a four-stringed musical instrument with a banjo-type body and a neck with sixteen frets (shorter than a banjo, but longer than a ukulele).
The banjolele is tuned GCEA, but when more volume is needed, it is tuned ADF#B. Both of these tunings are known as the 'my dog has fleas' tunings (5th, Tonic, Maj 3rd, Maj 6th).
The banjolele is the instrument played by George Formby, which was commonly referred to as a ukelele although George himself used the correct term (as can be seen in the film keep your seats please)

The View from the Foothills: Thank You, Jeeves, by
Instead, he has taken to playing the banjolele, an instrument so vile that he is evicted from his London flat when he refuses to give it up.
It seems that Jeeves has developed a horror of the banjolele, and the thought of being incarcerated with one in the confines of a small cottage is simply too much.
The banjolele, incidentally, is a real instrument; it's a banjo body with a ukelele neck.

 Banjolele technique and style
There are two problems though, the common banjolele tunings aren't that suitable for single note playing and the instrument can be a bit too soft to be heard properly.
Maybe it's better to think of the banjolele as a tool for adding some extra colour to another solo instrument rather than as a soloist on its own.
But the banjolele's lack of power might still be a problem especially in a larger band.

Later in life in the early 1990s George became reacquainted with the ukulele, an instrument he had been exposed to as a child, and fell in love with it.
George played a short banjolele solo at the end of The Beatles' song "Free As A Bird" from their 1995 Anthology 1 album.
If played backwards the voice--that of deceased Beatle John Lennon--can be heard saying "It's turned out nice again," which is a phrase associated with banjolele legend George Formby, whom George greatly admired being a member of the UK's George Formby Society.

There is also the banjolele or banjo uke, which has a banjo body.
The ensemble also introduced both the lap steel guitar and the ukulele into U.S. mainland popular music, where it was taken up by vaudeville performers such as Roy Smeck and Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards.
A number of mainland-based instrument manufacturers, among them Regal, Harmony, and Martin, added ukulele, banjolele, and tiple lines to their production to take advantage of the demand.

Rock, Onic and Bob don't just inflict their style on some old tunes, they assimilate the original essence of the song resulting in appropriate vocal sounds, accents and musical styles all being reproduced on 'boring old folky instruments'.

History and background behind the music and instruments that we play   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The banjo ukulele originated in 1918 and became popular during the 1920's, when a number of hybrid banjo-like instruments appeared.
The banjo uke (also called the banjolele) has a small (8" diameter or smaller) banjo "pot" combined with a soprano ukulele neck, and is played like a ukulele, with 4 nylon strings, but with a louder tone and shorter sustain.
This instrument became especially popular in Great Britain, through the music of the late George Formby.
