 The mandolin-banjo and the banjolin
Irish Banjo: The instruments: The mandolin-banjo and the banjolin
Strictly speaking the mandolin-banjo and the banjolin are two different instruments.
In reality the only difference between the two is that the mandolin-banjo has double and the banjolin has single strings (just like the difference between an ordinary acoustic and a twelvestring guitar), and the two names are in fact often used interchangeably for the same instrument today.

I am in search of anyone who may be able to show me the fundamentals of playing an instrument known as a 'BANJOLIN'.

There is a distinction between a mando-banjo and a banjolin.
The banjolin is like the mando-banjo (same scale, 17 frets) but has only four strings.
The banjolin is tuned the same as the mandolin/violin/irish tenor banjo.

My grandfather's dad got this banjolin and was playing it during World War 1 but i don't know how long before he got it and if he got it second hand or new.
All I know is that he played it to serenade the ladies on some or other river here in South Africa it was then passed on to his eldest son, who passed it on to my grandfather when he died.

Zither banjo construction was also used for 8 string mandolin banjos (quite common), 4 string banjoleles or banjolins (less common) and 6 or more string banjos (rather rare).
Don't be confused by finding a zither banjo with 6 tuners at the peghead - it's not likely to be a 6 string banjo - it was common practice for makers to use standard sets of guitar machine heads and just leave one of them unused.
A banjolin is a very similar instrument but with only 4 strings.

Sound Space: Science Fiction Audio Reviews
A scratchy sound--reminiscent of an old 78-rpm LP--dominates the first melody, a tune titled "Gypsy Song," before fading out just prior to "Metallic Sonata No. 1," a lengthy improvised number that showcases a skulking riff and haunting, repetitive tones.
Similarly atmospheric themes are explored on "Banjolin," "Metallic Sonata No. 2," "Metallic Sonata No. 3" and "Hooray For Dane." "The Trot" introduces energetic tremolos that swoop and soar over an indistinct guitar background, and the aptly named "Bleep-Bloop" accentuates percolating plops and plinks.
It mimics an illustration used on a well-known Benny Goodman disc, and serves as a sly reminder that many of the group's creations are, at least to some degree, improvisational in nature.

From 1927 to 1972, bowed zither instruments by the names of Violin Uke (pictured right) were mass-produced by musical inventor Henry Charles Marx (1875-1946/1947?) and his company, the Marxochime Colony in New Troy, Michigan.
Marx can be numbered as one of a number of late 19th century/early 20th century musical gadget manufacturers who combined two or more instruments into one: the Hawaiian ukelele and bowed violin, in this instance.

Norah Jones moves from the smoky jazz clubs of her monumental debut Come Away With Me to the sunny back porch with Feels Like Home, her impeccable follow-up.
The title says it all—relying almost exclusively on acoustic instruments, including accordion, pump organ, and banjolin, the album conveys the relaxed feeling of a private concert.
Jones’ piano playing remains at the center of each composition, but she employs it sparingly as an accent that fades to the background and then springs forward at opportune times, much like Ray Charles on his acclaimed country albums.
