In February 1960, the Bank of Sudan began acting as the central bank of Sudan, issuing currency, assisting the development of banks, providing loans, maintaining financial equilibrium, and advising the government.
The Faisal Islamic Bank, whose principal patron was the Saudi prince, Muhammad ibn Faisal Al Saud, was officially established in Sudan in 1977 by the Faisal Islamic Bank Act.
The theory of Islamic banking is derived from the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad's exhortations against exploitation and the unjust acquisition of wealth, defined as riba, or, in common usage, interest or usury.

The World Bank is expected to normalize relations with heavily indebted Sudan within a year, the lender's new director for Africa's biggest country said on Wednesday, reports Reuters.
Sudan had amassed about $25 billion in debt which needed to be reduced to $5-$6 billion before it could resume relations with the World Bank, said Diwan, who is based in the Ethiopian capital Addis Adaba.
However, the Bank was already involved in Sudan, giving technical advice on wealth-sharing in the recent peace process, and would manage foreign donations in a trust fund.

At the end of the period, the Islamic banks announced that the speculative venture was a confirmed loss and, according to the agreement the owner of the capital -Bank of Sudan- shouldered all the losses.

Sudanese official sources said that the central bank of Sudan has begun to specify daily prices for the euro in comparison to the Sudanese pound.
The sources stated that Sudan's bank released a statement recently in which it called on local banks to open accounts in the new currency, which actually began on January 4.
