Central bank - T2W Traderpedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
A central bank is usually headed by a governor, president in the case of the European Central Bank or chief executive/managing director in the case of Hong Kong Monetary Auhority and Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Advocates of central bank independence argue that a central bank which is too susceptible to political direction or pressure may encourage economic cycles ("boom and bust"), as politicians may be tempted to boost the economy in advance of an election, to the detriment of the long-term health of the economy.
One of the oldest banks that performed some of the duties of a central bank was the Bank of Sweden that was opened in 1668 with help from Dutch businessmen.

Sveriges Riksbank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sveriges Riksbank (Swedish National Bank) is the central bank of Sweden, sometimes called just the Bank of Sweden.
The Riksbank began its operations in 1668, its antecedent being Stockholms Banco (also known as the Bank of Palmstruch), which was founded by Johan Palmstruch in 1656.
The bank was obligated until 1975 by the swedish constitution to exchange the paper-certificates for gold but in 1931 a specialized temporary law was written to free the bank from this obligation.

Saving Together by Richard Douthwaite - JAK interest free bank in Sweden
While the Danish JAK banks are prevented by law from accepting deposits and making loans to people outside their local areas, Oscar’s bank serves all Sweden from a single office in Skovde, a town in the center of the country 180 miles west of Stockholm.
The bank’s public face and local roots are provided by hundreds of unpaid volunteers around Sweden who spread the interest-free message out of personal commitment—playing the same role that Oscar did before he was hired by the bank.
Conventional banks usually lend out more money than they have received in deposits, confident that, as other banks are doing the same thing, each will get enough of the new money its rivals create to balance the outflow of funds resulting from its own excess loans—creating money through a kind of musical chairs game.

We have a wholesale bank, which we have restructured in the last couple of years because the returns were too low, but I think we have done a very good job of restructuring that business, which is quite profitable at the moment.
Banks were not allowed to go into the mortgage market before the nineties in Denmark.
But we bought a bank in Sweden three years ago where we have grown the market share from 11/2% to 5%, and have taken market share away from the largest banks, specifically SEB and ForeningSparbanken who has lost market shares in the same period.

The 2005 Bank of Sweden Prize in Economics (in Memory of Alfred Nobel) was recently announced.
In 2004, when the Bank of Sweden Prize was awarded to two more economists of the Chicago School, Finn Kydland and Edward Prescott for their 1970 paper (using a lot of fancy mathematics) purporting to prove why central banks should be free of political oversight – many mathematicians finally revolted.
The latest Bank of Sweden prizewinners Aumann and Schelling are masterful researchers of human behavior and many of the games people and institutions play – even though, like economists, they focused mostly on conflict and competition.

 Beautiful Mind, Ugly Deception:
Of course, the prize money would come from the Bank of Sweden, not the Nobel Foundation, but all the rest would be done exactly as if it was in fact a Nobel prize, up to and including the ceremony of 10 December.
Of course, many will say: 'We all know it is the Bank of Sweden Prize, but it is much simpler to say ''Nobel Prize''.' In point of fact, the Nobel website is careful to make the distinction, thus habitually announcing the '2002 Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel'.
Though the effect of scarcity applies to the value of economic as well as symbolic capital, the credibility of the Foundation may already be affected by association with the Bank of Sweden and the economists.
