A-list - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The list was created by veteran entertainment journalist James Ulmer, who developed a 100-point method to quantify a star's value to a film production, in terms of getting a film financed and the cameras rolling.
Bankability is determined for films in three different budgetary levels: $5 million or less (typically independent productions); $5 to $25 million; $25 million or over (studio films).
When an A-list star releases a big-budget movie, it is usually considered a major Hollywood event and generally includes massive world-wide promotion of the film.

Star power -- as an essential component in any project's evolution -- continues to come with no guarantees, and its significance may ebb and flow, many observe, depending on the kind of film being put together.
As has been the case historically, attaching star power to a film is a key piece of the puzzle for companies and individuals that finance pictures through presales, says Jere Hausfater, president of worldwide distribution and acquisitions for Intermedia Films.
However, he points out that a decision to invest in star power can also be a risky proposition from an economic standpoint, considering the hefty up-front payments and, often, the gross-participation points that must then be factored into a film's overall cost.

"The results of The Hollywood Reporter's Star Power 2002 survey highlight an expanding universe of actors in the filmed entertainment industry at all levels who are finding their way to audiences globally via projects from the studio and independent sides of the business," said Burman.

On the other hand, one wonders whether Nicole's marriage to the highest-paid movie star in the world wasn't really a pair of velvet handcuffs -- that her exalted position made her too much of an insider to register with an audience.
This has meant that Kidman's waffled between trying to be movie star and trying to be a serious actress, with the result that she's merely competent at both.
Another of the challenges to Nicole's career is the unfortunate knack she has for always jumping on a successful trend only to have it run out of steam by the time she lands on it.

A bankable element is anything that makes people with money in the bank think that people with money in their wallets will want to go see the movie they're backing.
