The Banki turbine (also known as the Michell turbine) is a hydropower system similar to an over-shot water-wheel.
Unlike the water-wheel where the water is captured in buckets, the "middle" of the Banki turbine is left open and the blades that would normally form the walls of the buckets are angled.
Yet the Banki turbine is often many times more powerful than a traditional wheel, generating the same power as a large Diesel engine.

Turbine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wind turbines use an airfoil to generate lift from the moving fluid and impart it to the rotor (this is a form of reaction), they also gain some energy from the impulse of the wind, by deflecting it at an angle.
Gas turbines with multiple stages have the first stage reacting to impulse of the gas flow (because it is inefficient to increase the velocity when it is almost at the speed of sound) and later stages being designed for reaction in the decreasing velocity flow.
Bladeless turbine uses the boundary layer effect and not a fluid impinging upon the blades as in a conventional turbine.

Turbines are also divided by their principle way of operating and can be either impulse or reaction turbines.
The major disadvantage of impulse turbines is that they are mostly unsuitable for low-head sites because of their low specific speeds too great an increase in speed would be required of the transmission to enable coupling to a standard alternator.
Pelton turbines are not used at lower heads because their rotational speeds becomes very slow and the runner required is very large and unwieldy.

There's a high pressure in front of the turbine, while behind it a low pressure is maintained, so there's a pressure gradient: Steam shoots through the turbine to the rear end.

Therefore it is to be paid attention when building steam turbines to a further problem: With the number of passed impellers also the volume increases, which leads to a larger diameter of the impellers.

Overshot wheels are the most efficient type; an overshot steel wheel that is also backshot can be more efficient than all but the most advanced and well-constructed turbines.
Water wheels that are both overshot and backshot are often referred to as pitchback wheels or banki turbines.
Breastshot wheels are preferred for steady, high-volume flows such as are found on the fall line of the North American East Coast.

Water flowing into the top of the turbine not only spins the wheel by its weight, but as it flows past the blades and into the middle of the turbine, its direction is changed.
The system is somewhat similar to the Pelton wheel in concept, but requires less engineering in the wheel itself.
The Banki turbine has lower efficiency than other turbine designs but enjoys a niche market for low cost and home made installations.
