Carbon County marks the northern border of the Lehigh Valley region of the state and is considered part of the state's Coal Region, though the eastern and northeastern section is considered part of the Pocono Mountain Region.
Carbon County was created on March 13, 1843 from parts of Northampton and Monroe Counties and was named for the extensive deposits of coal in the region.
Carbon County is the location of the trials and executions of the controversial Molly Maguires, an Irish secret society that had been accused of terrorizing the region.

The Stonycreek River is the largest watershed in Somerset County draining approximately 468 square miles in the northern part of the county.
The headwaters of the creek lie in eastern Cambria County, near the Borough of Cresson.

 Description of the Geology of Centre County Pennsylvania
The Kittanning upper coal is the bed of the region, from 5 to 7 feet thick, in three benches, with a coarse cannel roof.
The astonishing straightness of the Bald Eagle valley (N. E.) across the county is explained by the vertical attitude of the rocks of the Bald Eagle mountain, at the west foot of which runs the low ridge of Oriskany sandstone VII, and Lower Helderberg limestone VI.
Of these immense ore beds the largest and most famous is that of Pennsylvania furnace, in the southern corner of the county, the open excavations extending 1500 feet in length by 500' wide and 60' deep, the ore being known to be 30' or 40' deeper.

The regional office was contacted by Luzerne County Emergency Management Agency that the emergency operations center was being activated at approximately 7 P.M. Jan. 19, and a precautionary evacuation of the entire Wyoming Valley area of the county had been issued.
Township and 3 acres in Taylor Borough -- for the existing landfill area, which is known as the Area II expansion, and an application to increase the average daily waste intake volume to 5500 tons per day and the maximum daily waste intake volume to 6000 tons per day.
Two former township supervisors were recently convicted in federal court of illegal disposal of hazardous waste in a separate case that dates back to 1992.

Proposals in the US The first in the U.S. would be build in Schuylkill County in eastern Pennsylvania, an economically depressed anthracite coal mining region whose economy revolves around waste dumping, coal mining, waste coal burning and prisons.
The processed waste coal is crushed, mixed with limestone (134,000 tons/year) from Herndon, PA and water (from the mine pool) before being sent to a gasifier, which uses heat and pressure to produce a gas stream and large volumes of solid waste (slag and ash).
Pennsylvania is already one of only 3 states where the general population is advised to restrict their consumption of all types of fish from any body of water in the state due to mercury contamination.

 2002 Governor's Award for Watershed Stewardship
DEP Growing Greener grants helped cover the cost of restoring streambanks, training township staff to maintain the restored areas, holding a community education workshop and creating an educational sign onsite.

This 2.5 mile rural waterway is maintained and improved through the cooperative efforts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Montgomery County, Upper Providence Township and the Schuylkill Canal Association as well as many local organizations and residents.
During operation of the canal, the house was surrounded by wooden walkways due to the muddy banks and towpath.
The area is leased from the Pa. Department of Environmental Resources by the township and is open to all as a recreational area.
