The banns of marriage or, simply "the banns", (from an Old English word meaning "to summon") are the public announcement from the pulpit that a marriage is going to take place in that church between two specified persons at a specified time.
In England, under the provisions of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act, the reading of the banns became necessary for the validity of a marriage.
In Ontario, the publication of banns remains a legal alternative to seeking a marriage license.

Once aware of the impediment the parish priest must defer the marriage, refer the matter to the bishop, and, where the Tridentine marriage decree is not valid he ought to warn the parties not to attempt marriage elsewhere.
According to actual English statute legislation, a marriage in the Church of England is invalid without a previous due publication of the banns or a license from the proper ecclesiastical authority granted only within the church of the parish in which one of the parties shall have resided for fifteen days before the marriage.
In all the provinces of the Dominion of Canada publication of the banns is required in default of a license to marry.

Below is a list of marriage licences for one or both parties in Angmering issued by the diocesan consistory court between 1600 and 1700 extracted from the Sussex Record Society's published volumes VI, IX and XII.

 Marriage License Books, 1907-1910
A marriage can only be solemnized in Ontario after one of the following has occurred: a marriage license is obtained prior to the event or banns are announced in the church in which the marriage is to be solemnized.
When a marriage was solemnized after the announcement of banns, a certificate of publication of banns was returned to the Registrar General, usually by the person who performed the marriage.
The practice of transferring the information found in marriage licence books into separate registers was stopped in 1910, resulting in the discontinuance of this series.
