BANNU, a town and district of British India, in the Derajat division of the North-West Frontier Province.
The valley of Bannu proper, stretching to the foot of the frontier hills, forms an irregular oval, measuring 60 m.
The principal tribes inhabiting the district are: (1) Waziri Pathans, recent immigrants from the hills, for the most part peaceable and good cultivators; (2) Marwats, a Pathan race, inhabiting the lower and more sandy portions of the Bannu valley; (3) Bannuchis, a mongrel Afghan tribe of bad physique and mean vices.

Previously the trans-Indus portion of the new district comprising the tahsils of Bannu, Marwat, and Isakhel, had belonged to the Dera Ismail Khan district, with Edwardesabad, then Dalip Nagar, as its head-quarters and the cis-Indus portion, comprising of the sub-division of Kachhi or Mianwali, to the old Leiah district.
To the north and west of Bannu proper were the Darwesh Khel Wazirs, who from contact with the civilized Bannuchis, and from the pressure of their own increasing numbers were already passing from the pastoral nomadic to the settled agricultural state.

BANNU: A Pakistan Army aviation helicopter crashed in a dam near here early on Wednesday due to a technical problem killing four soldiers and injuring three others.
Sources told The News that Kurram Militia personnel were deployed there to provide protection to a military convoy that was supposed to travel from Bannu to Miranshah, headquarters of the North Waziristan Agency, where the Army and the Frontier Corps are engaged in a military campaign against foreign militants and their local sympathisers.
AFP quoting an official source said the device was planted on a sharp bend near the town of Mir Ali by unknown miscreants.

There are quite a few versions as to the nature of their relationship but one that is widely believed is that the teenager had refused to sexually oblige the policeman.
The more important question is the intensity of the reaction by the people in Bannu and the amount of hatred they displayed for the police in the aftermath of the teenager's gruesome murder at the hands of the policeman.
Rather than finding a temporary solution to the problem by curbing violence through an administrative action and appeasing some elected representatives and local elders in Bannu, it would be worthwhile to determine the causes that have led to frustration among the people and damaged the credibility of most of our institutions.

A community-based study was carried out on blood groups representing a random population sample from urban and rural areas of Bannu region, North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan.
The objective was to determine the frequency of different blood groups in the region, which would not only help in blood transfusion services but also eliminate the risk of erythroblastosis fetalis in the neonates.
A 2.0 ml sample of blood was drawn from the antecubital vein of each subject in a disposable syringe, and transferred immediately to a tube containing ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA).

BANNU: A Pakistan army helicopter crashed into Baran dam early Wednesday near Bannu, killing one and leaving three people missing, officials said.
The crash was caused ``probably by a technical fault'' but army authorities will launch an investigation, said DPO Bannu Mohammed Iqbal Khan.
