  Cambodia Tales - Banteay Chhmar
One such place where this is a reality is Banteay Chhmar in the northwestern corner of Cambodia, close to the border with near neighbour Thailand.
Never fully excavated and inaccessible for decades due to Khmer Rouge activity in the area, Banteay Chhmar ("Narrow Fortress") was constructed late in the 12th century, allegedly as the funerary temple of King Jayarvarman VII's son, the Crown Prince Indravarman and four generals killed in the war against the Chams.
Banteay Chhmar originally covered an area of 2.5 x 2km (in comparison, Angkor Thom is 3km square) and contained the main sandstone temple, a number of other religious structures and a baray (1500 x 700m) to the east of the temple.

One of the major temple cities built by King Jayarvarman VII in the twelfth century, Banteay Chhmar is famed for its massive size, giant face-towers and remote location and I was hoping to enjoy the romance of a quintessential lost Khmer city as I rose at 6am after my first night in Siem Reap.
A few kilometres after the dusty town of Mongkol Borei, Banteay Neang is a small hill to the right of the road and across the one-track rail-line that links Sisophon with Cambodia's second city.
The road deteriorated badly for the remaining thirty minute (fifteen kilometres) trip to Banteay Chhmar, but as we arrived, the sun broke through the grey sky and bathed the outer laterite wall across the wide, water-filled moat in glorious sunshine.

The temple ruins in Banteay Chhmar (what I saw of them) look interesting and untouristed, and there is apparently a Guest House some 10 (or maybe 20?) kilometres out of town at the main temple complex.

It took us two hours on the dusty road (route 69) to cover the 40kms to Thma Puok, though thankfully the sun was behind cloud for much of the time, and we stopped for a beef and rice lunch at a busy restaurant opposite the police station.
The sandstone structure reminded me of a slimmer version of one of the main gates of Angkor Thom, with four massive faces at the four cardinal points, still in very good condition but lacking any lintels or pediments, whilst a large sandstone pedestal was wedged into a hole in the ground directly beneath the tower.
We left at 3pm and stopped at the western entrance gate of the main Banteay Chhmar temple, which was effectively a huge pile of sandstone blocks.
