Banteay Kdei has not been restored and allows the visitor to experience what it may have looked like originally.
Banteay Kdei was built of soft sandstone and many of the galleries and porches have collapsed.

Banteay Kdei, on the shore of Srah Srang, was built as a Buddhist monastic complex by Jayavarman II.
It is similar in style to Ta Prohm a stone's throw away, but smaller, less ornate (at least, judging from what remains to be seen) and less overtaken by nature.

The temple at Banteay Srei is somewhat far from the madding crowd, and it was very peaceful walking through the thousand-year old buildings.
towards the main concentration of ruins, we bounced over a 1/2 km rutted side road to Banteay Samré, an small isolated temple that has been very well restored.
The big tour buses seem to shun the poor road, and so it was very peaceful and one could wander everywhere without bumping elbows with other tourists.

It's in a pretty poor state of repair, but the crumbling stones create an interesting architecture of their own.
Highlights are the carvings of female divinities and other figures in the niches of the second enclosure, and a frieze of Buddhas in the interior court.
Opposite the east entrance to Banteay Kdei are the Srah Srang or "royal bath", a large lake, which was probably used for ritual ablutions, and its landing stage, decorated with lions and nagas.
