From Jakarta Banten can be done as a day trip, an express bus from Jakarta takes about 1,5 hours, these buses go to Merak on the most western tip of Java, there is a toll road between Jakarta and Merak.
From there it is still 15 kms to Banten.
Which might be better is to go to Serang and spend a night there (there are no hotels in Banten) to have a taste of Sundanese life in this town.
