Topic: Bantu siderosis

  Bantu siderosis - WrongDiagnosis.com
Bantu siderosis is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
This means that Bantu siderosis, or a subtype of Bantu siderosis, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

 [No title]
The term siderosis (or hemosiderosis) is conveniently used as a synonym for the accumulation of stainable iron, regardless of its degree or distribution.
Although hepatic siderosis is common in infants less than six months of age and may be evident, usually in mild degrees, in a variety of neonatal liver disorders, neonatal hemochromatosis is distinguished by the extrahepatic deposition.
Siderosis is also common in patients with chronic renal failure treated by long-term hemodialysis or renal transplantation; varying degrees and combinations of hepatocellular and Kupffer cell accumulations may be present.

 571. Iron (WHO Food Additives Series 18)
Although Bantu ingesting 100 mg of iron daily from alcoholic beverages absorb enough iron to cause varying degrees of siderosis by middle age, there is no evidence of abnormally high absorption rates.
However, severe cases of siderosis are associated with fibrosis and cirrhosis of the liver, as well as deposition of iron in the pancreas, adrenals, thyroid, pituitary and heart in a manner similar to that found in idiopathic haemochromatosis.
In contrast to the effects observed in the Bantu, it should be noted that in Ethiopia, contamination of cereal grain with iron-rich soil may result in an iron intake of approximately 500 mg/day.

 Hemochromatosis
Recently, we encountered 2 cases of diffuse iron deposition in gastric antral and fundic glandular epithelium, which in 1 patient eventually led to the diagnosis of hemochromatosis.
Gastric mucosal siderosis (GS) has previously been described in hemochromatosis patients, alcoholics, and in association with iron medications.
In conclusion, gastric mucosal siderosis is relatively uncommon (3%) but is important to look for as it may lead to a diagnosis of hemochromatosis in some cases.

  Hemosiderosis and Iron Overload
Bantu siderosis, or African iron overload is, as the name implies, a type of hemosiderosis found mostly in Africa.
Bantu siderosis is often associated with liver cirrhosis, and appears to be linked to higher than normal rates of infection and tuberculosis.
Bantu siderosis appears to be a genetic hemosiderosis, but the genetic mutation causing African iron overload has yet to be determined.

In South Africa the prevalent form of the disease is variegate porphyria, with a possible incidence of 1 in 1000 in the white population, whilst the Bantu population suffers mainly from porphyria cutanea tarda.
The acute porphyrias (acute intermittent porphyria, hereditary coproporphyria, and variegate porphyria), and occasionally plumboporphyria, present with intermittent attacks of neurovisceral dysfunction, which may be precipitated by various drugs and other exogenous factors.
Siderosis almost invariably occurs and an underlying active chronic hepatitis may rarely be present.

 NIDDK Clearinghouses Publications Catalog
This chapter on iron overload states is from a textbook that presents a comprehensive and up-to-date account of diseases of the liver and biliary system.
The authors use the term hemochromatosis to indicate the inherited genetic form of liver deposition and the term 'iron overload' to include all disorders associated with excessive iron overload.
Topics covered include iron metabolism, the pathophysiology of iron overload, genetic hemochromatosis (its diagnosis and treatment), and secondary iron overload, including that due to erythropoietic siderosis, porphyria cutanea tarda, chronic alcoholic liver disease, and African hemochromatosis.
