Topic: Banzai charge

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

Banzai charge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Banzai charge is a term derived from the Japanese samurai spirit and ideology of not accepting the shame of defeat.
Banzai is literally translated as "Ten thousand years" but more accurately "Long Live" and was a Japanese motto during the war.
The Kamikaze strategy used in World War II is a good exemplification of the banzai charge, although the banzai charge is used mainly for infantry troopers.

Charge (adapted Banzai rules): Any U.S. group containing a SL or ASL can declare a Charge as its sole action for that turn by playing a Movement card sideways (regardless of the presence of pinned men).
If a Charging group is at RR5 to a target group at the start of its turn, all of its members perform Close Combat as the sole action of that group for that player turn and all succeeding turns until there are no longer any opposing forces at RR5.
A Charging group can perform Close Combat at RR5 even while on a Wire card, but the Charging group suffers a -1 modification to its CCV for each Wire card it is attacking from.

Although the banzai charge triples the attack strength, this comes after halving the strength for the automatic fatigue placed on the charging units.
Other advantages conferred to charging units are that the terrain cost of the assaulted hex is reduced to zero (making longer charges attractive) and terrain protective effects are nullified (for both defender and attacker).
A couple of significant drawbacks that accompany such attacks are that retreat results are ignored (they reduce strength points instead) and the terrain effects modifier of whatever hex occupied by banzai units is increased slightly (this lessens the effect of the terrain modifier because they are not using cover as effectively).

The next day, was the first “banzai charge.” A sergeant mistakenly heard that one of the most respected officers in the battalion was wounded or captured.
The men yelled “banzai” and swarmed the area, a move that later in the war would be used again to rescue a lost battalion.
The “banzai charge” occurred because of the men’s concern for each other.

 Banzai Counterattacks
A banzai counterattack by the Japanese during World War II was typically the outcome of an operational failure, becoming the final effort to turn the tide of battle, or die in the attempt.
The soldiers were indoctrinated that, in the event of a Banzai charge, they were to kill themselves to avoid capture, if the counterattack failed.
The extreme behavior of the banzai charge* without regard to casualties is supposedly rooted in the ancient samarai Bushido code of death, honor, and loyalty to the emperor.
