Topic: Baptism Mormonism

Baptism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The choice to be baptized is made by a confessing believer (believer baptism, or credobaptism), regardless of age, as a confession of his faith; or on behalf of the child by his or her parents (paedobaptism) if the parents have themselves been baptized, and profess faith.
The Christian explanation of baptism as the definitive rite, by which the baptized person is indicated to be fully qualified for participation in the life of the Church, begins with the career of John the Baptist, who was the cousin of Jesus.
In normal circumstances, a licit baptism must be performed by a priest (for the Orthodox) or by a priest or deacon (for Roman Catholics and Anglicans) or by a duly ordained or appointed pastor (for Methodists).

Mormonism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Mormonism is also often used to refer specifically to the theology and subculture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is only one (though by far the largest) of the many church organizations that claim to be part of Mormonism.
The bedrock Mormon belief, however, is the acceptance of modern prophecy; each individual may receive person revelation to guide himself in his personal life, and certain people (prophets) have been divinely appointed to authoritatively speak the mind and will of God, as in Biblical times.
Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins by one who holds priesthood authority from God is needed for individual salvation.

 Baptism for The Dead
To the Corinthians with their inflated view of baptism, he makes the point that though all the Israelites who came out of Egypt were figuratively “baptized,” they were not thereby insured of God’s favor: “But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness” (10:5).
Since baptism and circumcision are near equivalents, as signs of the Old and New Covenants, respectively, it follows that one could say in the same sense, “baptism counts for nothing,” except as an outward sign of the inward reality of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Mormon writer Gregory A. Prince wonders at the coincidence that the book of Moroni, which contains this sole Book of Mormon reference to infant baptism, was produced in 1829, one year after the death at birth of Joseph and Emma’s firstborn child in 1828.

 MORMANISM
Baptism in the Mormon church, for both the living and the dead, is essential for the fullness of salvation.
A well-known statement within Mormonism is, "As man is god once was, as god is man may become." From a prior spirit existence in heaven, humans may be born on earth in order to exercise freedom to choose good or evil and to have a body for the resurrection.
Additionally Mormons must keep the "Word of Wisdom" by abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine; tithe to the church; attend weekly sacrament meetings; support the Mormon prophet; do temple works; and be active in their support of the church.

The Watchman Expositor: Mormonism's Baptism for the Dead
A unique teaching of Mormonism is the practice of baptizing on behalf of the dead.
Mormon Apostle Bruce R. McConkie taught: "...the Lord has ordained baptism for the dead as the means whereby all his worthy children of all ages can become heirs of salvation in his kingdom," (Mormon Doctrine, p.73).
Finally, a vital companion doctrine to baptism for the dead is the practice of genealogy, or tracing one's "roots" to determine the names of dead relatives.

Baptismal Regeneration and Bible Salvation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The ordinances (Baptism and the Lord's Supper) and "good works" (obedience to the will of God as found in the Word of God) are after the fact of regeneration and the result of saving faith, not a means of saving grace.
Yes, water baptism has it's proper, and important, place, but for the one who is already saved, not for the one who has not yet been born again; the latter needs to believe the Gospel and receive God's salvation as a free gift.
By no stretch of the imagination can ritual baptism be equated to the term "water" used by itself in texts in the Bible relating to the new birth; nowhere is there found a direct connection which brings these two terms-"water" and "baptism"- together.

The Mormon Church claims to have the only "fair" answer to the question of the destiny of the unbaptized Mormons think baptism for the dead is the only logical and merciful way to get around the problem.
The three points to remember when discussing baptism with Mormons are (1) the reality of original sin, (2) the sacramental nature and spiritual effects of baptism, (3) and the Church's teachings on the destiny of unbaptized souls.

The faith of the Mormons, and the practices by which it has been propagated, are of a class which, "to be hated, needs but to be seen" in their true light.
Mormonism caught, as we have seen, not only his followers and doctrines, but also his spirit, his eloquence, and even his faintings, his swoonings, visions, and ecstasies, and thus became "a thing of life," and rose at once, from wallowing in the gutter with Smith, to soar in the sky with its new compeer.
Like the Mormons, they believe that they are the only true church on earth, that they shall reign with Christ a thousand years, that they have all the apostolic gifts, and like them, they prove all their doctrines from prophecy, as well as by signs and wonders.
