The last straw came in 2003, when the alliance accepted as a member the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a rival group to the SBC formed by moderates who oppose denominational leaders’ conservative policies.

The Southern Baptist Convention voted yesterday to pull out of the Baptist World Alliance, accusing the worldwide organization of a drift toward liberalism that included growing tolerance of homosexuality, support for women in the clergy and "anti-American" pronouncements.
The Baptist World Alliance, which has a 20-member staff at its headquarters in Falls Church, is a loose, voluntary confederation of 211 Baptist groups with more than 46 million members around the globe.
Because the alliance has no legislative or judicial power over its member churches, the pullout is far less consequential than the threatened schism over homosexuality in the Episcopal Church.

Seville, Spain (BWA) -- Five new member bodies were accepted into the Baptist World Alliance during its annual General Council meetings in Seville, Spain, July 8-13 but it was the deferred action on the membership application of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) that has received the most attention.
After days and many hours of meetings, the chair of the Membership Committee, Ian Hawley, General Director of the Australian Baptist Missionary Society, announced at the Friday July 12 meeting, that the Committee believes the CBF application can be recommended to the General Council for acceptance in 2003.

(BP() -- Southern Baptists declined to consider a new name for the denomination, pulled out of the Baptist World Alliance, rejected a much-publicized education proposal and heard a speech from President Bush during their June 15-16 annual meeting.
The meeting was the 25th anniversary of the 1979 Houston meeting, which launched a movement now known as the conservative resurgence that returned the convention to its biblical, historical roots.
A resolution that called on Southern Baptists to pull their children out of public schools did not make it out of the Resolutions Committee, and messengers subsequently defeated a related amendment.
