In these circumstances, with guard duties in most settlements carried out by Arabs, and in some villages by young Jewish "irregular" volunteers — the Bar Giora organization was founded in 1907 in the home of Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, who later became Israel's second president, in Neve Tzedek, near Jaffa.
Bar Giora established the first communes of Jewish guards at Sejera.
Hashomer was thus able to regard these laborers as a reserve for guard duty and quickly organized its operations in a three-tiered hierarchy: a small core of founders (veterans of Bar Giora); a larger circle of active guards, members of Hashomer; and the Jewish laborers, who termed themselves a "labor legion", as reserves.

Messianic claimants (15) Simon bar Giora
Story: As a leader of the Jewish revolt against Rome, the Idumean Simon bar Giora -the surname probably means 'son of a proselyte'- was the most important rival of John of Gischala.
He was a very competent general who attracted some forty thousand soldiers, promising 'liberty for slaves and rewards for the free', a political program that was sufficient to incur the hate of the conservative Flavius Josephus.
Comment: Bar Giora coins bore the legend 'Redemption of Zion', indicating that there was a religious aspect to Simon's bid for power.

A History of Jews in Sports
Nordau's call for "muscular Judaism" was answered by the Maccabi movement, which spread first to the countries of Europe and Palestine and then around the world.
Over 100 Maccabi clubs were in existence in Europe by the beginning of World War I. The largest of these clubs -- Ha-Koah of Vienna, Bar Kochba of Berlin, and Ha-Gibor of Prague -- became famous for their outstanding teams.
The first Jewish sports clubs in the country, the Rishon le-Zion Club in Jaffa and the Bar Giora Club in Jerusalem, were established in 1906 by Leo Cohen and Aviezer Yellin, respectively, and shortly afterward the first qualified club leaders were appointed.
